Mazda3 Skyactiv-X - The best of both worlds

With the "Diesotto engine" Mazda has realized an old engineering dream. Premiere celebrates the thrifty and clean engine now in the compact model of the Japanese.

SP-X / Leverkusen. As clean as a gasoline engine, as fuel efficient as a diesel: Mazda launches the sale of the world's first compression-ignition serial gasoline engine. The 2,0-liter four-cylinder with Mildhybridtechnik celebrates premiere in the compact model Mazda3, there 132 kW / 180 PS and comes up with a standard consumption of 4,4 liters. The price list for the new top version of the trio starts at 26.790 Euro.

The unit marketed under the name "Skyactiv-X" is a compression-ignition gasoline engine that combines the advantages of diesel and gasoline engines and should be particularly economical. Only when the engine is cold and at very high engine speeds, the air-fuel mixture is ignited in a conventional manner by means of a spark plug, in the more frequent lean operation, however, the system operates on the diesel principle. However, Mazda continues to use the spark plug to initiate a portion of the fuel mixture. This kind of ignition ensures a more powerful piston stroke and therefore more torque. And because the combustion is less hot, smoother and therefore cleaner.
