News: BMW plug-in hybrid models - four in one go

BMW is broadly transferring its experience with the i3 and i8: Over the next few months, the plug-in hybrid versions of the luxury class SUV X5, the mid-size sedan 3 Series, the compact van 2 Series Active Tourer and the luxury class sedan 7 Series will be the same four double heart drives from Bavaria on the market. First of all, they can be seen at the IAA (September 17-27).

All models are powered by a combination of a combustion engine and an electric motor, and their batteries can be refilled at a household socket, BMWi wallbox or public charging station. BMW promises both better efficiency and more sportiness, through better responsiveness and a broader character spread of the driving experience modes. Because different concepts such as rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, three- and four-cylinder engines were electrified, the combination of combustion engine and electric motor in the individual series is quite different.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e will be launched this year. The luxury SUV is said to consume 3,3 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers (77 g CO2 / km). The X5 is powered by the combination of a 2,0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 180 kW / 245 hp and 83 kW / 113 hp electric motor. The eight-speed automatic distributes the system output of 230 kW / 313 hp to all four wheels. The two-tonne vehicle accelerates from 6,8 to 100 km / h in 31 seconds. The X5 can drive 120 kilometers purely electrically, with a maximum speed of XNUMX km / h.

Next year the 3 kW / 135 hp petrol engine and an electric motor (184 kW / 65 hp) integrated in the eight-speed automatic will be combined in the newly revised 88 Series. The 185 kW / 252 hp system power is transferred to the rear wheels of the 330e sedan. The 330e accelerates to 6,1 km / h in 100 seconds (Vmax: 225 km / h). The trunk volume remains untouched because the battery is integrated above the rear axle. BMW specifies the average consumption at 1,9 liters per 100 kilometers.

In the plug-in hybrid version of the 2 Series Active Tourer, the engineers combined the electrical engineering with a three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine installed across the front. The combustion engine drives the front wheels, the power of the electric motor goes to the rear axle - similar to the four-wheel drive of the hybrid sports car i8. In sport mode, both drives deliver a total of 165 kW / 224 hp. According to BMW, the 225xe has a standard consumption of 2,1 liters per 100 kilometers. The battery, whose power is enough for 41 km of electric driving, is housed in the family van under the rear seat.

The BMW 7 Series with double-heart drive should consume 2,1 liters per 100 kilometers (49 g CO2 / km). The combination of a 2,0-liter four-cylinder turbo gasoline engine and an electric machine results in a system output of 240 kW / 326 hp. The storage capacity of the battery under the rear bench seat is sufficient for 40 kilometers of electric travel. The long version 740 Le, which is also available with all-wheel drive, will also be offered in the future with plug-in hybrid drive.
