Mercedes-AMG GT R - The Green Beast

The facts speak for themselves. 585 PS, more track, more downforce and, for the first time, active rear wheel steering. Mercedes-AMG is serious about the AMG GT R. Supercar? Still come from Swabia, but now from Affalterbach!

On the evening before the venerable “Goodwood Festival of Speed”, Mercedes-AMG presented the escalation level of the AMG GT. Den R. Its special color AMG green hell magno reveals the athlete's roots. From the racetrack, for the racetrack. Motorsport with license plate and street legal.

700 Nm press between 1.950 and 5.500 revolutions from the turbo V8 with its Hot-V layout towards the rear axle. There the 7-speed dual clutch transmission is waiting to be used. In 3.6 seconds to 100 km / h - the end should not be until 318 km / h. These are the bare, easy-to-understand values. What happens in between, between the 3.6 seconds - before it goes over the 300 km / h sound barrier - these are the things that you will have to experience. Between heaven and earth there is still room for another super sports car. With the AMG GT R, the Swabians occupy another place.

The wide front splitter reduces lift on the front axle. On the outside of the front apron, additional air curtains calm the airflow, which improves the drag coefficient of the AMG GT R. The Air Curtains also direct the air through their narrow, vertical openings in a targeted manner in the direction of the wheel house, thereby optimizing the flow properties in the wheel house area. The AMG GT R also has new, independent wheel arch liners with special cooling air slots to ensure the perfect flow through the double wheelhouse radiator.

Another technical highlight also improves the aerodynamics of the AMG GT R: the active air control system. These are vertical slats that are hidden in the lower area directly behind the front apron. These slats are electronically controlled and can be opened and closed by an electric motor in around one second in order to improve the air flow and thus the aero performance.

The front fenders made of super-light carbon widen the front of the AMG GT R by a total of 46 millimeters and create space for the wider track and large wheel / tire combinations. The powerful design of the fenders also emphasizes the longitudinal dynamics. Another distinguishing feature is the special fender logo with a fin and a large air outlet through which waste heat is removed from the engine compartment. The fin is perforated and accommodates the AMG diamond logo with five struts.

The new AMG GT R reacts even more sensitively thanks to the standard active rear-axle steering, which is being used for the first time in a Mercedes-AMG model. The system offers an ideal combination of agility and stability - driving characteristics that are normally in contradiction to one another.

In the AMG GT R, two steering actuators replace the conventional toe links on the rear axle. The heart of the system are two electromechanical actuators (electric motors with spindle drive) that have no mechanical connection to the steering wheel. This “by-wire” system electronically adjusts the rear wheels in a predefined map. The change in toe angle on the AMG GT R is a maximum of 1,5 degrees at the rear wheel.

Up to a speed of 100 km / h, the rear wheels are turned in the opposite direction to the front wheels. This corresponds to a virtual shortening of the wheelbase. Advantage: The AMG GT R steers into corners with much more agility, making it even more fun to drive and requiring less steering work - especially on winding small roads, narrow racetracks with many changes of direction or during slalom. Further advantages are the increased maneuverability and the reduced turning circle in daily driving situations - such as when turning or parking.

If the AMG GT R drives faster than 100 km / h, the system turns the rear wheels parallel to the front wheels. This corresponds to a virtual extension of the wheelbase and noticeably improves driving stability. At the same time, the lateral force on the rear wheels builds up significantly faster when changing direction, which accelerates the response to steering commands. The driver also notices that the AMG GT R shows massive rear axle grip and great stability when changing direction quickly, without the otherwise noticeable impact of the rear. The active rear-axle steering not only improves handling in bends, but also supports the driver in sudden evasive maneuvers, thus increasing active safety. This makes the AMG GT R easier to control at the limit.

The chassis of the new AMG high-performance athlete is also systematically designed for use on the racetrack. To reduce the unsprung masses, wishbones, steering knuckles and wheel carriers on the front and rear axles are made entirely of forged aluminum. The double wishbone concept clearly guides the bike with the slightest elastic movement. The high fall
and track stiffness enables high cornering speeds and also gives the driver optimum contact with the road in the corner limit area located high up.

From the rear perspective, numerous innovations are also immediately noticeable. The new aluminum side walls widen the rear of the AMG GT R by a total of 57 millimeters, creating space for the larger 20 '' wheels and the wider track. Both measures improve traction and enable higher cornering speeds.

A major factor in the performance of a sports car is weight. For the structure of the AMG GT R, Mercedes-AMG relies on an intelligent mix of materials. The chassis and body are made of aluminum in various alloys, the trunk lid is made of steel and the front deck is made of magnesium. This extremely light element at the front reduces the inertia in front of the front axle and thus improves the agility of the vehicle.
