Mercedes at the # IAAmobility21

While many automakers are running an austerity program at the IAA, Daimler is going all out and introducing a whole range of electrical innovations. The most important one will soon be on the streets.

Daimler is expanding its range of electric cars across all brands. The group is now showing what is coming in the next few years at the IAA Mobility in Munich. Two models are about to launch, three more will take a little longer.

EV first at Mercedes-Benz

Instead of “EV first” it will in future be called “EV only” at Daimler, postulates the CEO Wave Källenius at the premiere of his company's new products on the eve of IAA. From 2022 an electric drive option should be available in every segment, from 2025 there will be at least one E variant of every model. In the same year, three pure electric architectures are to go into series, on each of which various models will be created. This should help to increase the share of electric and PHEV cars in global sales to 50 percent by the middle of the decade.

New: the Mercedes-EQ EQE

The Mercedes EQE, the series version of which can be seen for the first time in Munich, plays an important role in this. The electric cousin of the E-Class should travel up to 660 kilometers, inside digital and classic luxury should caress the customers. The almost five-meter-long EQE is the smaller brother of the EQS, which was presented earlier in the year and which is celebrating its premiere at the IAA as an AMG model with 560 kW / 761 PS from two electric motors and a more sophisticated look and acoustics. In addition to the first purely electric vehicle, the tuning subsidiary of Mercedes has also brought its first plug-in hybrid to the Bavarian capital. The electric motor on the rear axle of the four-door GT 63 SE Performance is not primarily used for emission-free locomotion, but as a dynamic booster for more power and better power distribution.

Concept: Maybach-EQ

In addition to AMG, the luxury provider Maybach will also continue to electrify. A study of the upcoming, all-electric luxury SUV Mercedes-Maybach EQS can be seen in Munich. The concept car is also a first preview of the normal EQS SUV, which will start in 2022 and thus come a year earlier than the Maybach version. As the third Mercedes sub-brand, the G-Class also gives an impression of its electric future. The Concept EQG carries the well-known designer trains with angular body, but instead of diesel or gasoline, it comes with four electric motors - one per wheel, which should ensure particularly variable all-wheel drive. Little design gimmick: The spare wheel cover on the tailgate is based on a wallbox. A market launch could take place before the middle of the decade.

Last but not least, the only real electric brand in the group to date should not be missing. Smart presents the study of its upcoming model, which is no longer a small city car, but a sturdy compact SUV with a range of more than 400 kilometers. Built together with the Geely Group in China. The first production model is expected for the coming year and is similar to the Concept # 1 shown in many ways.
