Mercedes-Benz CLS certified according to WLTP

The introduction of the WLTP is comparable for the customer-relevant CO2 and consumption values with a currency reform: The vehicles do not technically change, they are only measured according to new requirements. Källenius: "And so far we have not only kept an eye on cycle consumption, but also on real consumption in customer operations." For example: across the model range, Mercedes-Benz vehicles are at the forefront of aerodynamics. This has an effect in real operation, but minimal in the previous NEDC.

The new CLS is the first Mercedes-Benz to be certified according to WLTP in the Euro 6d-TEMP emission level. For this purpose, compliance with the limit values also had to be demonstrated in the so-called RDE road test (Real Driving Emissions). The effort for certification according to WLTP is about twice as high as according to NEDC. The very extensive regulation on this (over 700 pages) contains many different individual tests and completely new approaches. The requirements for the test execution, the evaluation of results and their documentation are significantly higher. The effort for each individual test has also increased significantly.

In contrast to the NEDC, the WLTP driving cycle lasts ten minutes longer and only has a downtime of 13 percent (NEDC: 23,7%). The total cycle length is around 23 kilometers - more than twice as long as the NEDC with 11 kilometers. WLTP includes higher speeds of up to 131 km / h (NEDC: 120 km / h), the average speed increases to 46 km / h (NEDC: 34 km / h), and it exposes vehicles to greater fluctuations in speed.

The test specifications are therefore much stricter. In addition, it is no longer tested, as previously, only the basic variant of a model, but special equipment is considered. In addition, as part of a road test, the so-called RDE (Real Driving Emissions Test), it is checked that the Euro 6 limit values for nitrogen oxides and particle number are not exceeded taking into account conformity factors.

In Germany, the new WLTP values are expected to be specified in brochures and all other publications from September 2018. Mercedes-Benz answers the most important questions about the WLTP at https://www.mercedes-benz.com/ de / mercedes-benz / fahrzeuge / wltp /.
