Rental car prices

Those who book a rental car while on vacation have to expect significantly higher prices this year. It gets expensive, especially in the southern European holiday regions.

The cost of rental cars has risen massively this summer season. Especially in Spain, vacationers have to reckon with high prices, as data from the comparison portal “Check24” shows. Accordingly, a car this summer on the Iberian Peninsula costs an average of 146 percent more per day than last year. In Ibiza (plus 229 percent) and Mallorca (plus 193 percent), inflation is even more pronounced. Customers in Italy (plus 84 percent) and especially in Sicily (plus 108 percent) must also expect high surcharges.

In Germany, rental car costs have risen by 21 percent within a year. This means that the increase is moderate compared to the many holiday countries. Vacation homes have become cheaper in Turkey, where prices are 15 percent below the previous year's level. Austria has also become cheaper - by an average of 5 percent.

The most important reason for the price increases is likely to be the corona pandemic. Many car rental companies had reduced their fleets due to travel restrictions. Now that demand is picking up, there is a lack of supply. Also because many car manufacturers have delivery problems with new vehicles due to the current semiconductor shortage.
