Mitsubishi Space Star - Cheap, cheap, cheap?

"Hey, I recently bought sneakers that were totally cheap!" Cheap! A much scolded word. One that could possibly be used for the current Mitsubishi Space Star? Or is the Japanese Kleinstwagen about cheap. Or cheap? Habby got to the bottom and shows in the test on YouTube, what the Japanese on the box. And in it!

Cheap, cheap, cheap? This is of course a matter of personal purse. For Habby is the Mitsubishi Space Star not immediately into one of these categories. No, the little gray car is just a car that Habby can afford. And you too! Otto Normal just! But now Tacheles.

Is this new?

A child of the 1990er will answer at this point: "No, but washed with Perwoll". To make no subliminal advertising here, Persil, Ariel and consorts are of course also mentioned as a great detergent. But it's true: the Mitsubishi Space Star has been on the market in this form since 2012 and is therefore not quite dewy. However, he got 2016 an extensive facelift. He has become much nicer than the pre-facelift variant. Especially in the highest equipment "Top", which was ready for the test. The so-called "full-spec" version with the 80 PS strong gasoline engine, front-wheel drive and CVT transmission looks really noble and mature. Cheap microcar from the Far East? Hardly likely!

With the streamlining of the Mitsubishi Space Star's facial features, the front grille was finally retracted, making the Japanese look like a "full-fledged" car. In addition, there is a lot of chrome, which makes the 3,85 meter short city streaker an eye-catcher. Otherwise, the Asian looks inconspicuous, especially in the waiting gray tone. So inconspicuous even that the five doors go down. But at the rear turns the tide: Here stands out the not undersized roof spoiler and could even serve as a shelter for some people even in the rain ...

Joking aside: The Mitsubishi Space Star could have been a bit more boldly styled. But really something to suspend there is hardly the optics. But what are those people who buy a Space Star? You're the one! It's me - everyone who is annoyed by public transport. The one who can not stand the bad body odors of others in the morning in the train. The one who does not want to be cooped up like a livestock on the bus to work. And those who have a longer journey to the gymnasiale Oberstufe. So all those who have little budget, but still want to afford the comfort of a cheap vehicle. Even the ADAC certifies the Mitsubishi Space Star 1,0 in the price-performance ratio. Cheaper? Nah, that will not work!

With the power of three combustion chambers

But what is hidden under the bonnet of the bonsai Mitsubishi? The Japanese offers only three-cylinder engines with 1.0 liter displacement and 71 PS or with 1.2 liter displacement and 80 PS. The "big" unit generates 106 Nm and should evaporate on average 4,1 liter super to 100 km / h. In reality it is one liter more - and that fits perfectly. Especially when you consider that the Mitsubishi Space Star is equipped with a CVT transmission and does not even bring so bad performance on the road. In 12,8 seconds it goes to 100 km / h, final is at 173 V / max. The bus is hardly faster?

But how was that? A CVT transmission? Exactly! This is an infinitely variable automatic transmission, which prevents jerking jerks and thus offers a high level of comfort in the city - in the area in which one would switch frequently with a manual transmission. Stepless means that the transmission permanently varies the overall ratio. This is not the last word for long motorway journeys, but it is ideal for driving to school, the supermarket or just to get from A to B in a metropolis like Berlin.

The small turning circle of just 9,2 meters also lends itself to this. The best friend in the passenger seat so navigator and off you go in the big city jungle. Sounds like adventure, but sounds like many, abrupt changes from left to right. No, the other right! No matter how tortuous the road is, how narrow and how poorly cared for by the street guard - the Mitsubishi Space Star does it all and grunts its peanuts with its three-cylinder engine. A nice sound.

But what does the Mitsubishi Space Star IM Box have?

Some! It is not thought possible, but four adults travel extremely comfortable in the small Japanese. The driver may look forward to a height-adjustable steering wheel. The driver's seat is also adjustable in height - at least reasonably. Only the seat support surface is adjusted at the end of the day. But sponge over it, after all, the seats are comfortable and the place more than adequate. And that with the short total area.

As a "top" model, and this name is doubly occupied (basic, plus and top equipment), the microcar also comes with a wealth of equipment. Cruise control, speakerphone, seat heating and much more is on board. But also a lot of hard plastic. Nevertheless, one must remember that one finds here a car that is offered in the basic version for 9.990 Euro. Some dealers are even 3.000 Euro cheaper. Is that cheap then? Inexpensive? Cheap?

It is clear that the interior quality of the price range seems appropriate, offers a great all-round visibility and even a decent trunk holds ready. 209 liters are available. Who can not do much with this number, just look at the video on AutoHub and meets a visibly hoarse Habby, who is even more surprised by the space available.

So what now?

"But what is he, the Mitsubishi Space Star? Cheap, cheap, cheap? "Everyone decides that for themselves. After all," cheap "is often negatively connoted and the little Japanese has not earned the best of intentions. And the buyers also know that: The Space Star is the best-selling Mitsubishi in Germany. And that with private buyers. They value the low starting price, the favorable insurance classifications and taxes. And with the repairs it is not far away, since the little one brings a great guarantee: Five years offer the Japanese. And so the Mitsubishi Space Star is simply worth its price - so cheap. Well, the "full-spec" test car comes on 16.990 Euro. But do you always have to reach the top of the shelf? All the bad experiences in public transport are going on with the basic version, right? For those who are interested in the Space Star, Habby has something special for them: a Mitsubishi Premium test drive for 48 hours. How do you get that? Watch a video! Here we go!
