Driving report: Honda CR-V 1.6 Diesel

Another SUV.  There is no vehicle class that is more successful than this. Reasonably manageable, almost compact vehicles. The customer goes for it. In the case of the Honda CR-V, it is also a co-founder of the segment.

In the driving report:

HONDA CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC

The economy utility vehicle

Most noticeable about the look of the new CR-V is the C-pillar. This powerful chrome arch that seems to want to impress the entire C-pillar, plus these taillights. The back and the diagonal view from the back, there is something of Nordic elegance about it. The CR-V looks neatly drawn - almost a little sporty in its design language. The thick plastic edges around the sills, the wheel arches and the bumpers then speak that “mumbling dialect” with which SUVs want to tell of their off-road heroics. For free. This CR-V was born for the asphalt. Fortunately, the CR-V completely saves itself from playful design gimmicks.

Even if the ground clearance is superior to that of a normal station wagon - the test car came with front-wheel drive and saved all-wheel drive entirely. The new one is pounding under the hood “Earth Dreams” diesel engine with 1.6 liter displacement and 120 hp, Honda does not even offer this modern engine as an all-wheel drive model. Thus, the order of this CR-V version is clear: Efficiency is high on the wish list.

Honda CR-V Earth Dreams Diesel

Probably the most economical SUV in its segment!

Honda is for the CR-V with the 1.6 liter diesel engine an almost unbelievably low consumption in the third mix. With only 4.5 liters, it should rush through everyday life. These values had to be investigated and it was already clear how the CR-V drives (Driving Report Honda CR-V), the current test of the Honda CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC revolves around the topic of efficiency in everyday life.

Who wants to drive offroad?

In the end, we use it to park in underground garages at airports and shopping centers. Take the children to the swimming pool and the woman is happy about the high seating position. Therefore, the drive via the front axle is completely sufficient in everyday life, we rarely experience traction problems between kindergarten and office. The SUV itself promises a certain freedom from worry on all routes, even if we all too often find ourselves on the deadlocked paths of civilization in everyday life. The SUV is simply practical - if it weren't for the usual disadvantages: Like the excessive fuel consumption, right?

The test car with the 1.6 liter diesel is only available as a front-wheel drive version and with a manual transmission. Good prerequisites for mastering everyday life as efficiently as possible. But really as much fun as HONDA promises? In order to make a comparison, I have selected three test routes in the region that I drive with each test car. And because I understand the NEDC as a “norm”, but it does not represent everyday life, I have also mapped three different scenarios. (More about test consumption and NEDC)

The consumption

[tabgroup] [tab title=”Everyday driver”]Anyone who drives the CR-V with the 1.6 liter diesel engine in normal everyday life without thinking much about consumption and efficient use will settle at less than 6 liters per 100 kilometers. And even 5.2 liters on 100 kilometers is feasible in everyday life![/tab] [tab title=”Eco-Expert”]If you want to drive the CR-V particularly economically and try the “Eco-Expert mode”, you will fall below the 5 liter mark without being considered to notice traffic obstacles. With 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers, the HONDA CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC is one of the most economical SUVs on the market![/tab] [tab title=”Without consideration”]Round three takes no account of consumption. Proper attack on the motorway, sporty on the country roads and with the peace of mind that someone else will pay the fuel bill. But here too, the CR-V with the small turbodiesel doesn't become a drunk. 7.9 liters is a more than impressive value.[/tab] [/tabgroup]

Space and driving comfort - virtues of the CR-V

The current CR-V generation looks sober from the outside, but inside Honda has made a lot of effort. And the result can be convincing. Good workmanship and a proper choice of materials determine the impression. I wouldn't call it premium yet, rather neat, homely pragmatism. The steering wheel, with its thick rim and integrated controls, sits comfortably in the hand.

But there is also criticism: The door trim on the driver's side can be pushed in too easily with the driver's left leg. You have the feeling that you are bending the door panel - this does not look particularly solid and thus spoils the B rating in the haptic rating.

The navigation and multimedia system in the Honda CR-V costs € 2.200 and offers a 6.5 ”large and graphically appealing display. It also includes the Bluetooth hands-free system for the mobile phone and a 50 GB internal memory.

Driving experience:

Thanks to its 1.6 Nm, the 300 liter diesel engine has no problems with the 1.6 ton SUV. If necessary, the four-cylinder diesel presses the occupants into the upholstery with a quiet grumbling and pushes the entire load forward forcefully. Tempo 180 on the motorway, even permanently, is no problem for the CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC.

As already mentioned at the beginning, Honda deliberately gave preference to sporty road tires when choosing tires. You can tell well from the steering reactions of the SUV. The CR-V is almost as athletic in its reactions to the steering commands and speedy highway exits leave no sense of discomfort. The CR-V drives like a sporty family suit, only the high seating position is reminiscent of the SUV genes.

Above all, the extremely efficient noise insulation both of the engine and in terms of wind noise make the CR-V a gifted motorhome. He travels long distances easily and stress-free.

Advantages & disadvantages - conclusion:

Among all SUVs, the CR-V offers something that many other SUVs do not express so clearly: It does not pretend that it was built for off-road adventures. It is a clear combination replacement. Trendier and with a little more ground clearance.

The five seats of the CR-V are to be taken seriously, the equipment from the Elegance version is extensive and the trunk offers a lot of space with up to 1.669 liters. The CR-V is the estate replacement for the whole family.

criticism courses
A door panel, which unfortunately can only be easily impressed by the driver's leg, that is the main point of criticism in the interior of the CR-V. I would classify the problems in the coordination of the assistance systems with the somewhat more specific German motorway traffic as “common”. The adaptive cruise control and the CMBS system are simply too comfortable for the hectic everyday life on German autobahns.

Honda CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC 2WD - the conclusion:

Anyone looking for a replacement for a family station wagon will find an economical and trendy SUV in the CR-V. In connection with the modern diesel engine, this SUV is not a “sport utility vehicle” but a “economy utility vehicle”.
