Toyota moon car - long-distance electric vehicle for astronauts

The fuel cell car Toyota Mirai looks a bit like a spaceship today. A new group brother could actually fly into space in the future.

Car manufacturer Toyota is developing a fuel cell car for the Japanese lunar program. The Rover, which was built on behalf of the national space agency Jaxa, could be flown to Earth's satellite in about a decade and used there as a means of transport for up to four astronauts.

Toyota is planning a fuel cell car for the moon

The vehicle is said to be around 6 meters long and 5,20 meters wide and provide around 13.000 liters of interior space. Its electric motor is powered by a fuel cell, additional energy is provided by solar cells. The lunar car will be used mainly for longer trips to 10.000 kilometers, during which the astronauts can also live in the vehicle.

So far, Toyota's experience with fuel cells has been limited to Earth. The Japanese have been offering the Mirai hydrogen sedan since 2014, and a successor is expected to be unveiled at the end of the year.
