New engine for the Toyota Yaris - Up - instead of downsizing

Toyota replaced in the Yaris the previous 1,33-liter gasoline engine by a 1,5-liter unit. The new Saugbenziner should enable better performance with less consumption.

For the larger displacement four-cylinder Toyota in the Yaris 82 kW / 111 PS and 136 Newton meter torque. Compared to the 72 kW / 98 PS and 118 Nm strong 1,33-liter model, this should shorten the sprint time by 0,8 to 11 seconds. Also intermediate sprints go faster: in the future, the Yaris will be able to accelerate from 80 to 120 km / h in 17,6 instead of 18,8 seconds.

At the same time, the engine should burn cleaner and work more efficiently. For the engine accredited to Euro 6C Toyota promises a good 12 percent lowered fuel consumption. This would reduce the consumption of the Yaris from 4,9 to probably 4,4 liters. Among the factors responsible for the increase in efficiency are an increase in compression on 13,5: 1 and a new valve control, which allows the engine to switch between the Otto and Atkinson cycles. Thus, the gasoline engine can spontaneously switch to the optimal cycle for each driving situation. At motorway speeds, a new water cooling system on the exhaust should also reduce exhaust gas temperatures and thus fuel consumption. (Mario Hommen / SP-X)
