In our second part of the new releases for 2018, today everything revolves around the most striking sports cars that will appear on the tarmac next year. All four sports cars presented by us come from Europe's most renowned manufacturers. The new sports car releases in 2018 are also a major milestone in sports car construction for the manufacturers.
BMW 8 Series: A GTE racing car for your own fleet
The Bavarian engine works promise for November 2018 the first model of a whole series of new releases. The new 8er should 6 series from BMW and will at the same time serve as a template for the GTE racing car for Le Mans. At BMW, the market launch of the BMW 8 Series Coupé represents one of the largest model offensives in the company's history.
The luxurious 4,83m long 8-series coupe scores particularly well with its 4,4 liter V8 biturbo engine and its comparatively manageable starting price of 140.000 euros compared to the other new sports cars released in 2018.
In addition to the 8 Series, BMW is also planning an M model. Enlarged air intakes, a sports exhaust system and a modified brake system make it clear that there is still a lot of room for improvement in terms of performance. The racing car, the BMW M8 GTE, also builds on these performance values. It is being developed for BMW's return to Le Mans.
Ferrari Portofino: entry-level model with a new name
As the successor to the California series, the Portofino is initially characterized by its similarity in structure: a front engine, rear-wheel drive, four seats and a foldable hardtop are also installed in the Portofino. Unlike its predecessor, however, more horsepower is used in the Portofino.
The models appearing in May 2018 will have an impressive 600 hp and thus a top speed of 320 km/h. The Ferrari Portofino accelerates to 3,5 km/h in 100 seconds. The improvement in torque to 760 Nm is also reflected in the price – the basic version of a Ferrari Portofino is said to be around 180.000 euros.
Mercedes AMG GT4: visually GT, technically E63
Externally, the four-door AMG sedan is reminiscent of the GT, but its equipment corresponds to that of the AMG E63. The model, scheduled for market launch in September, shines thanks to a 4 l V8 biturbo with 585 hp and includes a modified version of the 5-speed automatic transmission. When it comes to tires for the AMG GT4, Mercedes relies on variable 4Matic Plus all-wheel drive.
Furthermore, an expansion of the performance of the model is planned for mid-2019, which is to be achieved through a plug-in hybrid. Equipped with a flexible battery size and various power levels guarantee up to 816 hp and a purely electric range of 50 kilometers.
From September 4, the AMG GT2018 will inherit the CLS-AMG version, which will be phased out in late summer 145.000, at a starting price of 2018 euros.
Porsche 911: Bigger, but not heavier
The new edition of the 911 of the new sports car releases 2018 lengthens the body again by 2 cm. The track width also increases by a few millimeters, but the weight remains unchanged despite this widening. The performance of the six-cylinder boxer engines, on the other hand, increases and promises 400 hp in the basic model and even 450 hp in the S version.
The engine stays where it has always been, namely in the rear. In what is now the eighth generation, Porsche has integrated a fully digital instrument panel into the dashboard of the 911er. Only the rev counter remains as an analog display for the driver.
Another change affects the RS line, which changes from naturally aspirated to turbocharged engines. Whether a plug-in hybrid will also be installed in the Porsche 98.000, which is available from 911 euros, has not yet been fully clarified, but it could offer an electric range of 30 to 50 km.
