New e-car batteries: four-digit ranges possible

If you believe a German-Dutch battery developer, the range problem of e-cars will soon be solved. Stromers could even leave diesel sedans behind.

A new German-Dutch battery technology promises electric car ranges of 1.000 kilometers and more. The new batteries could be used as early as the end of 2022.

Faster charging

According to the developers, the special feature of the new energy storage is a nanometer-thin coating on the battery, which significantly increases the longevity, safety and capacity of the cells. Even ranges of 2.000 kilometers should be possible in the future. According to the announcements, the charging time is also short, 80 percent fill level is reached after ten minutes. The so-called SALD technology (“Spatial Atom Layer Deposition”) is suitable for both current lithium-ion batteries and future solid-state batteries.

The new batteries were developed by scientists from the German Fraunhofer Institutes and the Dutch state research institute The Netherlands Organization (TNO). Marketing is now taken over by the newly founded SALD BV in Eindhoven. According to the company, initial talks with automobile manufacturers are already underway.
