News: 3 questions to Matthias Müller - CEO of Porsche AG

500 mileage range - fully charged in 15 minutes. Wakes up with Mission E. Porsche Hopes for a more comfortable e-mobility. We spoke to CEO Matthias Müller.

Mission E is one of the trade fair stars. What prompted Porsche to rethink the pure battery-electric vehicle (BEV)?

We have not rethought consistently. With the Panamera E-Hybrid, the Cayenne E-Hybrid and the 918 Spyder, Porsche is the only premium manufacturer to have launched three models with plug-in hybrid drives. And for the next few years, advanced plug-in hybrid systems will remain the best synthesis between sportiness, suitability for everyday use and sustainability. This has not yet been possible with pure electric vehicles. However, battery technology is now facing a major leap in development in terms of range and charging time. Based on this new technology, we have developed the Mission E concept - a sports car with a purely electric drive that fully meets the high demands placed on the Porsche brand.

When can we expect series production of the Mission E?

It will take a few years until all the technological innovations that we use in Mission E are ready for series production and are available in sufficient quantities and at reasonable prices. At the end of the decade, it might be ready - provided that the framework conditions for the everyday operation of electric vehicles are also right.

Who will pay for the future charging stations and what do you expect from politics?

First of all, the future operators pay for charging stations. You want to build a business model with it. But without state start-up funding, there will be no modern infrastructure. Because to be able to work with charging stations to cover costs, a critical mass of electric vehicles must first be driven on our roads. However, we need clear political support so that electromobility can prevail. This applies to start-up financing as well as to the development of the network infrastructure - for example, by providing land at the motorway service areas that are federally owned.
