The year is 1974: Giorgetto Giugiaro becomes the largest crisis solver in the history of VW at VW. The Italian star designer didn't really know what happened to him when he was commissioned to save the troubled company with the Golf. But the plan worked and the Golf I hit the ground hard in 1974. In 2017 it is an old acquaintance again: the Golf VII. It did not even get a facelift - at least in Volkswagen German. In Wolfsburg one speaks of an update. We take a look at what update entails.

The exterior looks carefully sharpened

You can see the Golf VII update currently in Wolfsburg on the streets pull and notes: You have to look twice to make it out as a facelift. The pre-update version still looks fresh and does not look outdated. A typical VW remedy: evolution instead of revolution. For example, the Golf VII Update features new paint colors that cover the range from classic white or black through pretty gray tones to the new, striking turmeric yellow. Those who do not want to perish in the gray uniform mush may consider this color as a successful alternative.

Turmeric Yellow - A shade that best suits the Golf VII Update.

Otherwise, of course, new rim designs come into play that cover formats from 15 to 18 inches, and for athletes à la GTI and GTD even in 19 inches. The new and more striking headlights of the compact are more noticeable. They are optionally available with full LED technology. At the rear, the new taillights are just as noticeable as the now available blinker running light, which we have already seen in a similar form Audi know. Depending on the equipment, chrome trim is added, while the typical golf design language remained untouched. That means a dynamic silhouette with a wide C-pillar.

Interior: infotainment in TV format

Neither will you notice any major changes if you order the new Golf in the basic configuration. However, the Radio Composite Color with color screen, touchscreen, AUX-in and SD card reader is now standard. The interior of the Update Golf is really exciting with the Active Info Display. This 12,3-inch screen replaces the usual round instruments and shows the driving-related data such as speed and engine speed. In addition, the driver assistance systems or the navigation map are displayed so that you only need one look to see everything instead of looking at the instruments and then look at the infotainment again. Otherwise, not much happened inside the Golf VII update; What remains are high-quality materials and great workmanship - as you are used to from a Volkswagen.

That goes in - the Variant still offers plenty of cargo space.

But there is certainly something new at the front of infotainment. If the base already comes with a handsome touchscreen solution with a 6,5-inch display, the next better system - the composite media - already has a USB and Bluetooth interface for coupling mobile phones. In addition, you get an 8-inch display, which is the highest of the feelings with the pre-update version. With the refresh, the entry-level navigation system - the Discover Media - now accesses this display. The new top device, the Discover Pro, has the correct TV format. Its 9,2 inch touchscreen with proximity sensor offers a razor-sharp image and is pleasing with its clear operation. The two navigation devices can be supplemented with “Car Net Guide & Inform”. This extension offers the opportunity to find out about useful destinations in the area, such as parking lots or gas stations. It also offers real-time traffic information based on the Internet. The “Guide & Inform Plus” gives you access to satellite images, detailed Google Earth images and 360 ° Google Streetview images.

To be on the safe side - the assistants

Of course, the VW Golf VII was a very safe contemporary even before the update. With the appreciation, however, hand was created again. Thus, the Front Assist, which is now no longer visible in the lower area of the front bumper, is attractively hidden behind the trademark. The environment monitoring system comes as standard on board the "Comfortline" medium equipment line and has a city emergency braking function with pedestrian detection at the ready. There are of course the ACC, the adaptive Abstandstempomaten. The latter can be supplemented by the comfort-enhancing congestion assistant, which not only keeps the distance to the vehicle in front constant, but also accelerates it again and stays in the lane. The system even brakes the Golf to a stop and then picks up speed when the traffic jam allows.

The Golf GTE with 204 hybrid hp is still in the range.

Another useful assistance system is Emergency Assist, which takes over partial control of the vehicle as soon as the system detects that the driver no longer appears to be fit to drive. If you are not sure that you can maneuver your Golf into tight parking spaces without damage, you will be delighted with the parking and steering assistant. It is supplemented by the integrated parking space function - after all, you have to leave the tight parking space again at some point. The blind spot sensor and the Lane Keeping Assistant are known and of course included in the Golf VII update.

Drives - something for everyone

It has actually always been that way and it remains with the update: The range of engines in the Golf is simply huge. You start with the petrol engines with a 1.0 liter three-cylinder with 85 hp. Above that ranks another three-cylinder, which produces 110 hp and should already propel the Golf VII properly. The 1.4 liter turbo petrol engine with 125 hp, on the other hand, promises a little more driving dynamics, while the new 1.5 liter four-cylinder with its 150 hp should look quite sporty for most drivers. If that's not enough, you can still use the Golf GTI with 230 hp or the top version Golf R with 310 hp. The sports Golf, which is equipped with all-wheel drive as standard, generates 2.0 hp from a supercharged XNUMX liter four-cylinder.

You have to look closely to see the facelift.

The diesel start, as usual, with 1.6 liters cubic capacity. The base unit performs here 115 PS and meets, like his larger brothers, the Euro 6 emission standard - the entrance to Stuttgart is therefore no problem dar. Above are the two 2.0 TDI with 150 and the sporty GTD with 184 PS. The consumption should - depending on the model - settle between 3,9 and 4,9 liters. Also available is a TGI variant. this Golf Alternatively, you can fuel with natural gas or gasoline, so that a total range of around 1.300 km can be achieved if both tanks are full. This is and remains the Golf a classless pleasure - no matter what equipment or engine.
