News: Mercedes GLC - The better GLK

Mercedes has replaced the GLK with the GLC. The difference is much larger than one letter suggests. At least visually, the new GLC has far fewer off-road genes than its predecessor. If it was still rugged and angular, the new one nestles very nicely in the design language of the brand. In mid-September comes the 4,66 meter long SUV to the dealers, prices are between 44.506 and 46.410 Euro.

Not only outside wins the GLC by length growth. Body and wheelbase have increased by almost 12 centimeters each. The overhangs at the front and rear are small, which makes the mid-size SUV stocky and conveys robustness. The bumpers are offered in three different versions, in addition to the basic version, there is an off-road version with a larger angle of repose and the AMG version.

Inside, the GLC wins by the width grown by 5 centimeters. The cockpit furniture seems to float, the individual features are airily positioned, the bold shaped center console and the freestanding screen support this impression. In addition, the perfect workmanship at the highest level conjures up upper-class attitudes in the GLC.
The functionality is not too short. The trunk holds at least 550 liters, that's 80 liters more than before. If you fold the back seat backrests in one easy step, you increase the loading volume to 1.600 liters, and here too the SUV increased by 50 liters.

Little variety is the range of engines to start. Two diesels, both with an 2,2 liter displacement and an 2,0 liter petrol engine are on offer. 125 kW / 170 PS and 150 kW / 204 PS deliver the diesels, their torque ranks on 400 and 500 Nm torque. On 155 kW / 211 PS it brings the turbo petrol engine, all of them transfer their driving forces via an automatic transmission with new gear ratios on all four wheels.

All units work quietly and with low vibration. On top of that, they have become more economical. Up to 19 percent their average consumption has dropped. 5 liters of fuel are enough for the 100 kilometers of diesel engines, the gasoline engine requires 6,5 liters of fuel for the standard distance. The engine power is sufficient for the 1.735 to 1.845 kilograms weighing GLC in almost all circumstances.

Although the visual demands do not demand it, the GLC proves distinct off-road capability. The 4matic permanent all-wheel drive, which gains in potential with five different off-road driving programs, masters tricky tasks in terms of traction and maneuverability. 70 percent gradeability allows the GLC to climb the heights, the wading depth of 30 centimeters allows you to cross some ford. What is more suitable than buying decisions is the permissible trailer load. 2.500 kilograms allowed to take the two diesel on the hook, the petrol drag at least 2.400 kilograms. No peaks but still enough for many a boat or the stocky draft horse in the horse trailer. This trailer load is always sufficient for common caravans.

The active roll control of the suspension as standard makes the GLC a very agile partner on winding roads. The steering is precise and responsive, but the brake requires high pedal pressure, which sometimes makes the metering difficult.

The numerous assistance systems that are available on request are helpful for those who like it. The stowage pilot with stop-and-go function is included, the Crosswind Assist and a collision warning system with flashing brake lights for inattentive backers. There is also blind spot monitoring, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign and Pedestrian Detection for the Pre-Safe Brake, and the Intersection Keeper, which anticipates transiting traffic. The ensemble is available for around 2.500 euros and almost moves the GLC to autonomous driving.
