News: VW Golf Cabrio - Open version is discontinued

Volkswagen will stop production of the Golf Cabriolet in just a few weeks. The model was arrived at the end of its planned construction period, it is said by VW. Currently GTI versions are still being built, which will then come in a special color on the market.

The open version of the bestseller is still based on the platform of the Golf VI, the predecessor generation of the current model. From the Golf VII, which is on the market since 2012, there will be no convertible version. Whether the next generation will get an open variant, about VW does not say anything.

In general, the convertible segment has been struggling for years with a decline in demand. In the past year, only 75.679 open passenger cars were newly registered in Germany, 1,3 percent less than in the previous year. At the end of the last decade, the number of convertible new registrations was in the six-digit range. As a result, many manufacturers have recently discontinued their cabriolet series or have not renewed it. The most successful convertible in Germany was 2015's VW Beetle with 8.705 new registrations, followed by the VW Golf with 7.757 units and the BMW 2er convertible with 6.602 vehicles.
