New car registrations in Europe: The crash of diesel

Only every third new car in the EU is powered by a diesel engine. The market share of the compression-ignition engine fell by almost ten percentage points compared to the previous year.

SP-X / Brussels. Sales of new cars with diesel engines fell massively in the EU in 2018. According to the industry association ACEA, a total of 5,4 million new cars with diesel engines were registered, 1,2 million or 18,3 percent less than in the previous year. The number of new petrol engines rose by 12,8 percent to 8,5 million in the same period, the overall market grew by 0,1 percent to 15,2 million cars. 

In 2018, just over every third new car in the EU was a diesel (market share: 35,9 percent), compared to 44 percent in the previous year. The gasoline share rose from 50,3 to 56,7 percent. Electric cars, including the plug-in hybrids, accounted for 2 percent of all new registrations. Conventional hybrid cars reach 3,8 percent, all other alternative drives come together to 1,5 percent.
