Premiere: The new Opel Karl

Seating in the small town of Rüsselsheim

Opel Karl starts at 9.500 €

Things are going really well again in Rüsselsheim. Since the sister brand Chevrolet has withdrawn from the market and the parent company GM has understood what Opel needs - namely its own way - the Hessians have been accelerating again.

Opel Karl - The Mini Van from the Far East

The roots of the new Opel Karl are in the Far East, in Taiwan. And actually, little Karl could have been born a Korean. But now the chrome flash grins in the friendly radiator grille and Karl fills the small car segment from Opel with three core strengths: “Economical, safe and strong”. And there is enough space for five occupants at 3.68 meters.

Seat test in the Opel Karl

Comfortable enough for this vehicle class. I want to say. A visually successful interior and even in the trunk there is still space for shopping on the weekend. The three-spoke steering wheel with the remote control for the hands-free system and cruise control is easy to hold. The large display of the optionally available multimedia system was integrated high above. This includes the operation of the air conditioning. The interior looks well thought out when you first try out the seat. The headroom is of course excellent, which shouldn't come as a surprise with such a high-roof compact. Adults can even enter row two. But the rear doors could open a little wider - other competitors can do that!

Economical - the new Karl

The new 1.0 liter Ecotec three-cylinder should be economical. However, with the 75 hp engine, Opel also saved on turbocharging and direct fuel injection. Regardless - the all-aluminum engine should still produce the 75 hp with only 4.3 liters per 100 kilograms. This means that “little” Karl ends up with just 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Safe, inexpensive - the new Karl

With 9.500 €, the people of Rüsselsheim pinned little Karl an attractive price. Of course, the Karl neither speaks to customers with OPC cravings, nor is he urged to higher SUV orders. The Karl has become a reasonable car. Clear in size. Thanks to the high roof, it still has enough headroom and even if Opel currently only offers one engine: everyone can cope with 75 PS. And you probably don't need more power in everyday life.

If you look at the Price list of the Opel Karl , it is striking: Even in the Selection equipment, the Karl has everything you need for everyday life as a “slip-on box”. Above this are the “Edition” and “Exclusiv” variants. If you choose the Exclusive, which costs 12.900 €, you will almost get the look of the vehicle from this article. Black B-pillars, deeply tinted windows in row 2 and sleek 16 ″ alloy wheels with 195 / 45-16 tires are then available in the style package.

The base price of € 9.500 was also achieved by the fact that the Opel Karl lacks air conditioning in the “Selection” equipment. It has to be bought for € 850 together with the infotainment radio.

We will test how the little Rüsselsheimer drives in a more detailed test!
