Quota for electric and eco-drives

More than one in three New cars the public sector must be an electric car in the future. And the truck and bus fleets of the federal and state governments are also to be equipped with eco-drives.

The federal and state governments must now pay more attention to the environment when buying a car. One now applies to newly purchased vehicles Eco quotawhich stipulates an increasing proportion of “clean” models. According to this, 38,5 percent of all public cars have to emit less than 50 grams of CO2 per kilometer. In addition, the permitted pollutant emissions are limited to 80 percent of the applicable limit values. At the beginning of 2026, the regulation will be tightened, then 38,5 percent of new acquisitions will have to be completely emission-free, which means that only pure electric vehicles will in fact be allowed.

Much more eco-drives in 5 years

Different definitions apply to trucks and buses. There, vehicles are considered clean if they are powered either electrically, with natural gas, LPG or with pure bio-fuels. In the case of trucks, ten percent of the new vehicles are to meet these requirements by the end of 2025. For buses, shares of 2025 percent are set for the end of 45 and 2030 percent by the end of 65. There are exceptions for military, agricultural and forestry vehicles, among others. Police and fire service vehicles, snow plows, road sweepers and coaches are also exempt from the regulation.

The background to the law that has now come into force is an EU directive. It had to be implemented into national law by August 2021.
