Renault Scénic and Grand Scénic - more design, less space - but still a real van

While many manufacturers are currently converting their family carts into crossovers and SUVs Renault stuck to the classic van at the new Scénic. Three generations were already in the showrooms of the dealers, at the 15. October, number four rolls to the dealers. From 19.990 Euro, the five-seat Scénic is then available, for the optional with seven seats available Grand Scénic, with better equipment, at least 23.490 Euro due.

With modern styling in Espace style, Renault takes the van optically from the Biedermann corner, but unfortunately the tight-fitting tailor-made suit is at the expense of the space available: in the rear of the 4,41 meter long Scénic, 1,70 meter people come across theirs Borders and the 23 centimeters longer Grand Scénic does not turn out to be a space miracle; the two 800 euro extra seats in the third row are only for children anyway. Those who do without passengers in the second row can push the bench seat forward or lay the armchair flat from the trunk. In the short Scénic you can load 572 liters of luggage up to the somewhat cheap-looking load compartment cover, the Grand swallows 765 liters in the five-seater version - that's a bit more than its predecessor.

Nothing can be adjusted on the chassis, but the smooth, direct steering, the throttle response and, if present, the shifting strategy of the automatic transmission can be influenced via the Multi-Sense system

Too bad: At first glance it looks like the Renault has a very low loading sill, but there is another step behind the large flap. And the distance between the bumper edge and the beginning of the trunk - over which everything has to be lifted - is relatively wide. The interior, on the other hand, is all the more practical: With numerous storage compartments and a glove compartment designed as a drawer, there is an additional 63 liters of space for small items, and the center console with four USB inputs can traditionally be moved from front to back. In the better versions, the dashboard is dominated by an iPad-sized, upright touchscreen; the base has a simple, but no less stylish radio system. The instruments in front of the driver are fully digital and can be adapted to your own taste, there is also a colored head-up display, which is quite small and vibrates noticeably on shaky stretches.

If you switch to a petrol engine for the current diesel situation, you have the choice of two 1,2-liter engines with 85 kW / 115 PS or 97 kW / 132 PS. Both make a turbo pressure and ensures sufficient torque in the lower rpm range. The more powerful engine provides 2.000 Newtonmeter 205 tours, so while he is not as strong as the Diesel, but you are well off the mark and can, if the slightly imprecise six-speed transmission strives effortfully, even elicit overtaking potential. Exemplary: From the engine is hardly anything to hear in the interior and with nearly seven liters of consumption was on our first round of testing just over a liter above the standard. Between Scénic and Grand Scénic, the thirst on paper is only a few tenths of a liter.

Diesel drivers can choose between three options: The entry-level model develops 1,5 liter displacement 81 kW / 110 PS and is optionally available with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. From the end of 2016, the base diesel can also be ordered with hybrid support: The 10 kW electric motor (14 PS) switches imperceptibly to the driver and supports the burner at low speed, so should the standard consumption of 3,9 liters again by a few Decimal places are reduced. The Scénic can not drive purely by electric power. In addition there are two 1,6er with 96 kW / 130 PS as well as the top model with 118 kW / 160 PS, which comes as standard with six-speed dual-clutch transmission and puts all others in the shade with 380 Newtonmeter. Also, in terms of driving values, the dCi 160 is the only one that sprints to Tempo 100 in less than ten seconds and speeds up over 200 km / h.

The power comes on the road exclusively on the front axle, and standard with 20 inch wheels. That looks chic and thanks to the large tire cross-section is not even at the expense of comfort: neatly bounces the Frenchman Schnitzer in the asphalt and comes only at very nasty transverse joints sometimes stammer. Nothing can be adjusted on the chassis, but the smooth, direct steering, the throttle response and, if present, the shifting strategy of the automatic transmission can be influenced via the Multi-Sense system. However, the adjustment range is rather small. There are also settings for the engine sound, the air conditioning or the massage function, which, for example, automatically starts working in comfort mode.
