Ssangyong Korando - Unrecognizable

Over 35 years, the Ssangyong Korando looks back on an eventful history with many breaks. The upcoming new edition is more a repository of evolution.

With each new edition, the Ssangyong Korando has changed dramatically. This is also the case with the sixth edition, which celebrates its premiere at the Geneva Motor Show (until 17, March). Unlike the predecessor, which is characterized by many curves, the new outer skin is sharp-edged and full of character. In addition, the compact SUV, which has grown slightly both inside and out, offers a number of technical innovations.

First, for the Ssangyong Korando in Germany, a gasoline engine and a diesel for election

Thanks to the wheelbase, which grew by five centimeters on 2,65 meters, the Koreans promise, among other things, good space for the rear. The trunk can hold 551 liters, with the rear seat folded, it grows to 1.248 liters. Further ahead, the Korean offers a chic and modern workplace. The handbrake lever has had its day thanks to the electric parking brake. Instead of analogue circular displays, the instrument cluster consists of an 10,25 inch display. In the center console, there is an 8 inch touch screen for the audio system as display and operating unit. If a TomTom navigation is ordered, the screen diagonal increases by one inch. The infotainment system also allows the integration of smartphone functions thanks to Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

The modern metal skin is characterized by many character lines

Among the innovations of the Korando include the sill overlapping entrance doors, which prevents dirty calves when disembarking. In addition, the tailgate is electric. In addition, there are a number of new assistance systems, such as a camera- and sensor-based collision prevention system, distance cruise control as well as lane departure, distance, fatigue and cross traffic warnings. The latter initiates emergency braking in the event of a collision. In addition, lane keeping, high beam and blind spot assist are available.

In its new edition starting in the middle of 2019, the Korando visually takes a radically new direction

First, the Korando starts with two burners. The all-new 1,5-liter turbocharged petrol direct injection engine delivers 120 kW / 163 horsepower and 280 Newtonmeter torque. Consumption is expected to be around 6,3 liters. Alternatively, there is an 1,6-liter diesel with 100 kW / 136 horsepower and 324 Newtonmeter torque, which will consume around 4,3 liters. Both four-cylinder are available with six-speed manual and six-speed automatic and optionally with front or four-wheel drive. The versions with two-wheel drive are equipped with a start-stop system. Later Ssangyong wants to bring the Korando with purely electric drive on the market.

The workplace is tidy and modern

Market launch is mid 2019. Prices have not yet been mentioned, but these should be based on the level of the predecessor, which is currently available from around 20.000 Euro.
