The German car manufacturer is relying more than ever on reliability and chic and is documenting this with its representative in the C-segment. The estate version, the Sports Tourer, has been on sale since April this year. The Astra should score with comfort and safety from the next higher segment.
The Sports Tourer wants to combine driving pleasure and utility. In the 14-day test we were able to experience the caravan with the 1,4 liter petrol engine in detail. The sporty German starts at a price of 18.260 euros.
Opel Astra Sports Tourer ST Business 1.4 Turbo
From the middle class back to the future
Collect points with LED Matrix light
Despite the constant competition on the German market, the car manufacturer from Rüsselsheim has been selling the Kadett Caravan A (Generation 1963 - 1 sold under the name KADETT) since 5 for over ten generations over 5,4 million units of the developed and built C-segment station wagons. In order to bring marketing further back into the future, Opel has also addressed buyers from the D segment to the Astra K since the tenth generation was launched. Comfort and safety features like Opel OnStar or the LED matrix light should make the difference here. Company cars and frequent drivers want to take a purchase decision with a new engine generation and seats.
Well coordinated
The Opel Sports Tourer 1.4 Turbo with its tightly tuned chassis copes very well with road conditions such as potholes and bumps on urban streets. He does not lack a certain level of sovereignty even during evasive maneuvers. This is noticed positively after just a few kilometers. According to our tests, the sporty station wagon cannot be denied stability and comfortable driving behavior. The easy-to-move power steering also gives a good feeling of feedback, both on bends and on straight sections of the route. The dynamic tuning of the vehicle is particularly appealing in our tests with fast load changes for brisk driving. The standard consumption of 5,1 liters per 100 kilometers specified by the manufacturer cannot be fully achieved in practice. Our test car requires a good 6 liters. That's how we find a good value for a vehicle like the Astra Sports Tourer. The 1.4 ECOTEC® delivers a powerful 245 Newton meters of torque from 2.000 - 3.500 revolutions per minute. The power of the 125 hp engine allows the approx. 1,3 ton car to accelerate from zero to 9,9 km / h in 100 seconds. The top is up to 205 km / h, whereby the exhaust gas standard 6 is of course achieved. The very well-translated six-speed manual gearbox enables sporty and dynamic driving, while offering a comfortable shifting process without a great search for gearshift paths.
Loading capacity is full
With a vehicle length of 4,70 meters, the Opel Sports Tourer provides a comfortable ride for a total of five people. When fully seated, the caravan itself is not stingy in the trunk volume. 540 liters of maximum capacity are among the good values in its class. If the Opel driver breaks down the entire rear seat, the vehicle opens up a stowage volume of hefty 1.630 liters, which makes unproblematic transport even of bulky goods easy.
Networked vehicle
The clearly structured cockpit looks quite simple at first glance, but contains everything you need as a driver. On second glance, there are also plenty of extras that are simply not suspected in the C segment. The central switching point with the functions navigation, on-board computer, media and telephone forms the 8-Zoll display in the middle of the dashboard. As a highlight, we experience the system "Opel OnStar", as in some other Opel models. At the push of a button, the driver is connected to a call center that offers, in addition to automatic accident assistance, vehicle diagnosis and 24-hour emergency call and breakdown assistance, comfort features such as connecting a Wi-Fi hotspot and automatic destination entry in the navigation device, if you need the exact address Do not know your next destination. Very useful, because honestly, do you know the exact address of the nearest airport or train station?
Eye-catching mentality
As far as the look is concerned, the designers from Rüsselsheim, when looking at the side view of the Astra Sports Tourer compared to the 5 door version, continued to drag the elongated bead backwards in order not to alter the recognition feature of the Astra. In addition, the rear looks visually stretched and very athletic. The elegant headlamps, the wing-shaped LED daytime running lights and a typical Opel grill with dominant chrome clasp and prominent Opel-Blitz emblem are an eye-catcher. All in all, the new Astra looks aerodynamically improved over its predecessor, which we also cWValue of 0,272 confirmed.
Equipment from the middle class
Basically, the standard equipment of the Astra Sports Tourer is already sufficient for the basic model "Selection". The other variants such as "Edition", "Dynamic" and "Innovation" can be upgraded with numerous special equipment packages. A feature from the D-segment, which is also featured in the Astra, is the IntelliLux LED Matrix light. It allows the driver to drive at night with permanent high beam without dazzling oncoming drivers. Computer control switches the 16 LEDs on or off per headlamp. Unfortunately this equipment highlight is only available as an option. Next in the portfolio of Opel, the front camera "Opel Eye". In combination with this camera you can order the assistance systems "Front Collision Warning", Lane Assistant and Lane Keeping Assist, as well as Road Sign Assistant.
And finally ...
The Astra Sports Tourer presents itself as a vehicle with a lot of driving pleasure, combined with high utility value, which one does not immediately perceive visually. With elements from the next higher segment, the Astra laces up a very attractive package and offers plenty of sales arguments.
