Approached: The new Peugeot 108

And where do you live? What does your apartment, your house cost? Do you know the price per square meter? No? I checked that if you live in Hamburg, you pay between 7 and 13 euros per square meter. Depending on where you live in Hamburg. If the new Peugeot 108 were an average apartment in Hamburg - with a floor space of 5.6 square meters, it would probably cost € 56 in rent. The Peugeot 108 should not take root, however, it should make people mobile. Especially in the city. Time for a first trip in the new tiny Peugeot - the 108 in the first driving report.

Live French, on 5.6 square meters

The first exit in the new Peugeot 108

Triplets have become - again. And again from Toyota, Citroën and Peugeot. The lively trio of small cars was presented to the public in Geneva at the beginning of the year mein-auto-blog guest author Axel is already with the Japanese drilling Aygo through Amsterdam hazards. I was now able to experience how the Peugeot 108 performs.

The Peugeot 108 got the adult-looking face of the new Peugeot models. Practical grill, a little chrome jewelry around the nose, the lion pressed into the hood and jagged headlights. Anyone who knows the new Peugeot nose will immediately recognize the 108 as a Peugeot. Well done. The predecessor had still worn the thick lip of the old design language and always looked a bit like a grinning bear, a moronic grinning bear.

With the new model, that's now - Long live the revolution - History. The new 108 looks confident, mature, almost a little too serious. So that you can drive that out of him, those responsible have painted his lifestyle on his body. Anyone who wants can now choose from half a dozen design kits. Including “typically French” terms like “kilt, tattoo, dressy or barcode”. The color scheme can also be adjusted in the interior. The provides a good (colorful) insight Peugeot online showroom. One of the options is a crazy two-color paint job. More British, French, but hey - lifestyle!

Engines & transmissions and the most beautiful thing in the world

Peugeot offers two engines and two transmission versions for the 108. Theoretically. On a sheet of paper, this gives four ways to drive the little Frenchman. In fact, you can choose between a 1 liter engine with 69 hp and a 1.2 liter engine with 82 hp. The ETG5 automated manual gearbox is only available for the small petrol engine and the engine's start & stop circuit, which makes sense for the city, is only possible with the 69 hp petrol engine, but cannot be combined with the ETG5 gearbox. Selection looks different.

The nicest incidental in the world? Sure, drive a car. To get an impression of the 108, I drove both the small three-cylinder with 69 hp and the “big” three-cylinder with 82 hp. Above all, both engines are robust. Powerful in sound, pithy in idle, pithy in power delivery. The 108 benefits from its low curb weight of around 900 kilograms (915-935). So you hardly notice how meager the engines are in reality. Above all, the 69 PS three-cylinder has to work hard to get the 108 going above city speed. The 5-speed manual transmission is only of limited use here. A little bit clumsy, a little unruly, you stir back and forth between the 5 gears - only to find out that downshifting only makes everything louder, but hardly faster. Well - if you buy a mobile 5.6 square meter unit, you will probably hardly want to set the best time in the Tour de France. In this sense from the criticism back to the laudable. The electric power steering facilitates the driver's work to a minimum and the throaty sound of the three-potter is understood more as “nice” and “he tried hard in a positive way” rather than as annoying.

The good side of the baby lion

At 3.47 meters, the Peugeot 108 is cute and short. The wheelbase of 2.34 meters and the width of 1.61 meters leave enough space for the occupants. The large doors of the three-door make it easier to get into the French and you feel - the workmanship is completely ok - well integrated into the Peugeot 108. The seating position fits, but the steering wheel lacks a little adjustment options. If there is enough space for the occupants at 3.47, then something has to fall victim to the short dimensions. As usual with city vehicles, it is also the trunk of the 108. 180 liters remain for the 108 with a spare wheel and 196 liters for the version with tire repair kit. The thin rear seat can be folded down quickly, creating space for up to 780 liters of cargo volume. And different from the Toyota Aygo - we checked the 108! The important value of the loading sill height is 78,1 centimeters! Jawohl!

The sky is the limit

If you order the 108 with a folding sunroof, you will get a good pinch of fresh air in the little French in summer. However, the folding roof is only available in the higher-end Active and Allure equipment lines - but for both the three and five-door models.

Bring the action!

There is no longer a car without infotainment. No car without smart smartphone integration. Peugeot offers the right portion of clever technology for the “always on” generation. Placed exactly right between “I can still afford” and “can do more than I need”. Incidentally, the "new smart”Cut a slice. Both Mirror-Link (for ANDROID, WindowsMobile and RIM) and AppInCar (iOS) can be used with the “Mirror-Screen” infotainment system of the new Peugeot 108. The system is based on a 7-inch touchscreen and, in addition to the connectivity solution, also includes four speakers and an audio remote control on the steering wheel. Negative point here too: This system is only available for the Allure.

Price and conclusion

Theoretically, the 5.6 square meter apartment with its four wheels and hip styling options starts at € 8.890. That is the base price for the 108 three-door in the basic version and 69 hp. That corresponds to an unrenovated old apartment in the east of Berlin. If you want to live in the hip suburbs of Hamburg, you can grab the 82 hp 108 Allure Pure Tech 82 and pay € 13.150 for the three-door. So you can be seen in front of the next trendy bar. And if you don't make it home after that, you still have the 5.6 square meters of the little French and with 56 € a month (theoretically!), It is also quite cheap!
