European customers are already with the in Germany in 2006 Toyota Camry never really got warm. In the United States, however, the notchback sedan has been a bestseller for many years. The interest in the new edition now presented at the Detroit Auto Show (until January 22) was correspondingly great.
Visually, the Camry always came across as a Biedermann. But the new edition rejects the boring image with a much more progressive note. A powerful black grille, a demanding look, various character lines in the bonnet and the flanks as well as a C-pillar that runs far back give the sedan a certain something. Middle class does not have to be expressionless.
In addition, the Japanese, who has grown to a length of 4,85 meters, should offer his occupants more space than before. Especially in the rear, passengers should benefit from more legroom thanks to the wheelbase that has grown by five centimeters to 2,82 meters.
Toyota has upgraded the tidy interior with some soft touch materials. Large displays are also used. The instrument cluster offers a color display in seven-inch format, the screen of the new Etune infotainment system in the center console is eight inches in size. And finally, you can optionally order a color 10-inch head-up display. The Safety Sense safety system will be part of the standard equipment of the new Camry. This includes a collision avoidance, distance cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot and cross traffic warning.
In addition to two direct petrol injectors, Toyota will again offer the Camry as a hybrid version. The petrol engines are a 2,5-liter four-cylinder and a 3,5-liter V6. There is still no information about performance values, but the Japanese promise significant consumption advantages compared to the predecessor. Among other things, a new eight-speed automatic will help. A new CVT transmission is also used for the hybrid drive.
There will be no criticism from Donald Trump for the Camry. It is assembled in the USA and is also an American development. Market launch in the United States is mid-2017. The American Toyota subsidiary has not yet given any information about prices. (Mario Hommen / SP-X)
