Dream car from Wolfsburg

If someone asks me what I would do with a lot of money, then I always had the fixed idea: First, a chic cabin in the Eifel, one at the Coté and one in California and then a large garage for the many dream cars ,, you want to buy yourself. Dream car. Who does not immediately think of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Bugatti and Corvette? I.

Dream car from Wolfsburg

My age has influenced me and of course “my elders”. We've actually always driven Volkswagens. My teaching? At VAG, of course. The break reading? “Gute Reise”, the Volkswagen Group’s home and farm propaganda paper. My first car? A Golf 1 GTI. The “first”, with the small taillights and the 1.6 liter engine. Of course, that also had a strong impact. There's probably still a little grin twitching at the corners of my mouth today when I think back to the first summer of coming of age. It was a merciless summer. It was finally 18. 110 hp in series, plus a loud exhaust, hard Koni dampers under the sheet metal, and the back seat was swapped for a subwoofer box. I had fun with this car.

I earned the change for the adventures at the VW car dealership. And there were the sharp devices. And in principle nothing has changed about the dream car of “late puberty” to this day. Where others dream “of the grand piano”, of priceless treasures from Italy, of moody Englishmen, my heart beats for hooliganism from Lower Saxony.

Golf GTI 16V - Golf GTI G60 - Golf Limited - Rallye Golf - Country Golf

The inventor of the golf class has already done a great job. From the idea of the first Golf GTI grew a whole family of sporty Schuhkisterln. On my Golf 1 GTI followed the lethargic 54 PS-Saugdiesel my grandma. My one had it with the DDR sheets on the wheel just not easy at the TÜV, but soon came the first Golf GTI 16V. Of course, no cat. Engine code KR, without KAT, but with Hartmann exhaust system from fan. Herrlisch. 139 PS, at least.

But the dream was always the G-loaded Golf. A G60 GTI? 160 hp strong. And then, if you dreamed really madly, it had to be the Limited Golf. Externally boring and bland like a Golf CL with 70 hp, it had a lot of power under the hood. A small series of 16V G60 engines found their way out of the halls in Hanover (Volkswagen Motorsport) and ended up scaring the grown-ups among customers who were traveling with the Limited Golf. 210 hp, all-wheel drive. Simple optics. Even the 15-inch BBS rims are also available for the 70/75 HP variants. A dream. And only made 71 times. Anyone who is interested in such a “classic” today can open their wallet wide open.

Rally Golf, on the other hand, took a different path. As a homologation model for motorsport, the Golf grew angular cheeks. And because DE lenses fit better, the Rallye Golf was also given its own front. 5.000 pieces of today's classic were made. And if you believe Wikipedia, then there were 12 rally Golfs with wide jaws and the engine of the Limited Golf, i.e. 16V and G60. You can still get the “normal” G60 variant of the Rallye Golf for little money today, but also in condition 4 to 5. If you are looking for a “good” one, you can expect at least €20.000.

Golf Country was a completely different ball game. Long before the SUV wave swept over us, people in Wolfsburg took up the idea of an “off-road compact”. The Country Golf came with a martial bull catcher and there was even a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate. The Country Golf was only built for two years, from 1990 to 1991, and not in Wolfsburg, but in Graz at Magna Steyr (back then!). In total, only a little over 7.700 Golf Country were built and the vehicle was actually a flop, but if you look around the nation's used car markets, prices are rising here too. You can still get the country golf for less than € 4.000 - but these should be real construction sites. One of the few Country Golfs in the chrome edition, which cost more than DM 50.000, is hardly available for a small course anymore.

Dream car of the 90 years

Surprised?

For me these are dream cars. Not financially feasible at the time, no longer available today. Since I was built in 1975, my dream cars will be at home in the 90s. And no, it doesn't even have to be the Countach and F40 that make me rave - a Golf Limited or a Country Golf in its original condition would be enough for me ...

Incidentally, Jens has some highlights (including the Limited) of current VW Museum exhibition looked at and placed on Youtube in video form:
