TÜV report 2021: Mercedes and Opel with the most class wins

German cars do again best at TÜV. But a Korean can also score.

The Mercedes GLC takes overall victory

Mercedes, Porsche and Opel dominate the list of the best in this year's TÜV Report. With the lowest overall rate of significant defects, the Mercedes GLC took overall victory in the current ranking. The experts only had serious complaints about 1,7 percent of all mid-size SUV series vehicles tested.

Opel Insignia surprisingly came in third

In second place in the overall ranking were three models: the Mercedes B-Class, the Porsche 911 and - for the first time so far ahead - the Opel Insignia. All three had a defect rate of 2,2 percent. The results of the first HU after two to three years were taken into account. In all other age groups, the Porsche 911 took the overall victory - even among the 10 to 11 year old models, only 9,6 percent of the vehicles failed the test.

In addition to the overall winner and the first place in the individual age groups, the Association of TÜVs (VdTÜV) also selects the best in the respective vehicle segments. In the small car category, the Opel Adam came out on top with a defect rate of 3,7 percent, and in the small car category the Audi A1 (3,3 percent). The Hyundai i30 (2,5 percent) won the class for the compact. The other three segments won the top of the overall list: the Mercedes GLC for the SUV, the B-Class for the vans and the Opel Insignia for the mid-range models.

Models from the lower price segment performed worst

Models from the lower price segment in particular performed worst on the test bench: the Fiat Panda stood out negatively with a defect rate of 7,9 percent in the small car segment, and in the small car it was the brand brother Punto (10,5 percent). In the compact segment, the Dacia Logan got the most HU ruffles (10,4 percent), the Dacia Duster (11,1 percent) for the SUVs and the Dacia Lodgy (10,9 percent) for the vans. In the middle class, the Ford Mondeo came off worst (9,1 percent).

The German TÜVs have evaluated a total of 8,8 million general inspections for the statistics. The exams took place between July 2019 and June 2020.
