The Toyota Aygo of the second generation looks much more peppy than its good predecessor. However, he often does not see well, criticize the TÜV inspectors.
The new Toyota Aygo is in the starting blocks: with a capital X in the name and longer, better equipped and more expensive than the previous one simply called Aygo microcars. The second generation, which has now been retired, was launched in 2014 and more or less identical to the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108.
Body and interior
With the second generation, the Japanese designers showed a little more courage than with the predecessor. The front with the stylized X makes the 3,47 meter short small car stand out. It is available with three or five doors and has space for up to four people. However, if you want to ride in the back, you shouldn't have too long legs. The rear windows cannot be rolled down, they are turned off. The driver and front passenger, on the other hand, sit comfortably in spite of the small dimensions. The trunk volume is manageable with 168 liters. If you move the rear seat bench, the value increases to around 800 liters. However, if you want to use the trunk, you have to overcome a high loading sill.
The interior is either lively mouse gray or brightly colored, depending on the taste of the first buyer. The seats are not really suitable for long journeys. The turning circle of 9,6 meters speaks for use in inner-city areas. Fresh air fans keep an eye out for specimens with a roll-up roof. With the strips of fabric pulled back, convertible feelings can be awakened.
In 2018 the Aygo received a facelift in the summer. The "X" was a bit more three-dimensional, the LED daytime running lights, like the light signature of the rear reflectors, were revised. The interior came up with a modified instrument cluster and better insulation.
Motors and drive
Toyota made engine choice easy for those interested in the Aygo: There was only a 1,0-liter three-cylinder. This initially developed 51 kW / 69 PS, which after facelift versions come to 53 kW / 72 PS. The engine is sufficient for relaxed journeys in the city or on country and federal roads. The top speed is reached at 160 km / h. Toyota indicates the consumption with values around 4 liters. However, if you want to experience a little liveliness, you have to diligently use the manual five-speed gearbox to mobilize the 95 (later 93) Nm. As an alternative to the manual switch, Toyota offered an automated five-speed manual transmission.
Equipment and safety
The smallest Toyota was offered in different equipment lines, all starting with "x". For example, the models with the electric folding roof are hidden behind x-wave. The basic equipment "x" was mainly used to keep the price of the three-door car below 10.000 euros and is therefore sparsely equipped. From "x-play" radio and air conditioning are on board. From the facelift onwards, smartphone integration will also be part of the standard equipment. 15-inch alloy wheels, a multimedia system with a reversing camera and fog lights are part of the “x-cite” and “x-pose” comfort lines, each of which is distinguished by the colors of the inlays. “X-clusive” features two-tone paintwork and partial leather seats, among other things.
The Aygo achieved a four-star rating in the 2017 NCAP crash test. Those interested in used cars who are looking for a car for a novice driver should make sure that the safety system called "Safety Sense" is on board. It included a front collision warning system, emergency braking and lane departure warning systems, but was not always standard and could not be booked with all equipment variants for an additional charge.
Quality
The Toyota Aygo gives a mixed picture in the TÜV main inspections (HU). He usually masters the test criteria of the chassis and the environment without any problems. The TÜV inspectors, however, often complain about the lighting system above average. The low beam drives up the defect rate here. The braking system is also noticeable. Brake discs and the function of the foot brake give cause for complaint.
Conclusion
Small cars like the Toyota Aygo are popular as used cars, not just among novice drivers. This can also be seen in the prices that are called. Older models are to be had in the used car portals from 5.000 euros, but often with the basic equipment. You have to invest at least 1.000 euros more for copies that offer a little more comfort.
