Used car trade has increased significantly since 1980

Not only are new cars becoming more expensive, the prices for used cars have also risen in recent years. There is definitely a connection.

Used car prices have risen sharply over the past 40 years. While a used car cost the equivalent of 1980 euros on average in 3.000, those interested in used cars had to invest an average of around 14.000 euros forty years later, as a Statista graphic based on data from the German motor vehicle industry (ZDK) shows. Used are sold by both branded and independent dealers as well as by private individuals. Whereas in 1980 brand dealers were able to charge an average of almost 4.000 euros for a used vehicle, it was 18.750 euros in 2020. In 1980, independent dealers achieved an average price of around 2.800 euros, while private sellers came to 2.300 euros. In 2020, independent dealers earned an average of 13.310 euros for a second-hand car, while private sellers had to be satisfied with 9.740 euros. The increased used car prices correlate with the increase in new car prices. Whereas in 1980 a new car cost an average of 8.590 euros, 40 years later it was 36.340 euros.
