The environmental bonus makes new e-cars particularly attractive at the moment. Used models suffer from this.
The residual values of used e-cars are under pressure. Both pure battery-powered vehicles and plug-in hybrids are losing more of their value than petrol and diesel, as the market observers from DAT report.
In December, for example, the residual value for three-year pure e-cars was 50,6 percent of the new price, while gasoline-powered cars achieved 56,6 percent and diesel cars reached 52,5 percent. The experts expect a similar picture for January and February, for which, however, no final data are yet available. Overall, the market for used e-cars is still relatively small: 200.000 new registrations in the second half of 2020 contrasted with 20.000 changes in ownership.
The most important reason for the decline in value of e-mobiles is likely to be the environmental bonus for new cars. The premium ensures small price differences between the used vehicle and a new vehicle, making it unattractive for many customers. According to DAT, the fact that technological advances are still rapid at the moment and that three to four-year-old used vehicles tend to be out of date also plays a role here.
