Volvo wants to build the electric motors itself

Volvo has now come up with a new strategy, they want to build the electric motors themselves in the future. At Volvo, too, the drive range is being converted to e-mobility, but unlike the competition, the Swedes do not want to rely on suppliers for e-motors, they intend to build the motors themselves. This venture will cost the company around 68 million euros.

Es wird rebuilt

If Volvo wants to produce the engines for its e-cars itself, that means first of all that the plants will have to be converted accordingly. Initially, this only applies to the plant in Swedish Skövde, the development and the plans for the engines are still made either in Shanghai or in Gothenburg. So far, all electric motors for the electric cars from Sweden came from the supplier Valeo Siemens and they were all assembled in China. Now Volvo would like the assembly to be relocated back home, i.e. to Sweden, as soon as possible. Volvo hopes that this venture will be in the medium term folds and that Volvo will be able to build its own units completely itself from 2025.

Chinese owned

The automaker from dem the far north is now in Chinese possession. By the mid-2020s, the Swedes want half of all new cars built to have an electric drive. Diesel and gasoline engines no longer stand a chance, because Volvo wants the other half of new cars to consist of hybrid vehicles. At the same time, the Swedes want to reduce the CO2 emissions of their cars over their entire life cycle by around 40 percent compared to 2018. However, the goal that Volvo is aiming for is far more ambitious. The Scandinavian carmaker is determined to be completely climate neutral by 2040.

Are the Chinese there?

The desired goal is ambitious, the only question that remains is whether the Chinese owners support the whole thing. As is well known, only profit counts here and not the desired European goals against climate change.
