Comment: Once again the timing of an automobile manufacturer crashes to the ground. That was it with the solemn world premiere of new E-Class in Detroit, Scheduled for the New Year reception in the metropolis in the US state of Michigan, on the eve of the NAIAS 2016. Once again “professionals” are at work and publish what should have only been published much later. Once online, the threads split, the material is copied, and the content travels through the web. Whether intentionally or simply too stupid - that Niche website auto-presse.de has prematurely published an article prepared by ampnet for the world premiere of the new E-Class. The international portal autoevolution.com noticed it, long before the German premium magazines from Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart and quickly followed!

We have seen it at autoevolution and prefer publishing the content as well. However, unlike “colleagues”, we had not received any “NDA material” in advance from Mercedes-Benz.

The following text on the new E-Class was therefore pulled out of our fingers within minutes - we apologize for this and promise better content for the premiere. As soon as we have the original information!

There are huge shoes to fill for the new E-Class (W213) and everyone expects the tenth generation to be “even more Mercediger” again, to find even more distance from the competition, to be even more comfortable, even more dynamic, more modern again, another milestone on the road Be on the way to a “connected car”. And yet there has to be the E 220d that serves as a taxi. Cheap to maintain. Valuable even in the basic equipment. Convincing and suitable for long distances for business class company cars.

It is a Herculean task that was presented to Mercedes-Benz. A new “Generation E”. The world premiere of the new E-Class in Detroit is the start of the automobile year. And at Mercedes-Benz they really stepped on the gas.

S is better?

With Brainwax from the development centers in Silicon Valley Mercedes-Benz has made the new E-Class a beacon in the sea of “interchangeable” business class sedans.

The new E-Class will be the first series vehicle for “partially autonomous” operation. For this purpose, Mercedes-Benz has developed a completely new generation of “sensors” and assistance systems. Even the “still new S-Class” has to bow to the concentrated computing power in the new E-Class. Only with the facelift of the S-Class will there be the same level of development (overview of all assistance systems) can move in. The E-Class is the flagship of Stuttgart engineering.

On the other hand, a drag coefficient of 0.23 shows that what should be brought digitally into market leadership must also convince on the body side. The elegant shape of the new E-Class is well known. It looks familiar, like a symphony that makes us smile, only newly composed. Short overhangs, extended wheelbase. The E-Class appears streamlined. But not in the Hollywood style of a facelift that went wrong.

An optionally available multi-chamber air suspension will further increase driving comfort. The current generation was neither too soft nor too sporty. The Stuttgart team wanted to write dynamic talent into their DNA. Without forgetting the superior comfort character of a typical Mercedes. Was that successful? We'll find out in a few weeks.

The engines for the start of the E-Class

Two engines are available for the new E-Class at the market launch. The E 200 with a four-cylinder petrol engine and the E 220 d with a completely newly developed four-cylinder diesel engine. After the market launch, further model variants will complement the range. These include the plug-in Hybrid E 350 e. 30 kilometers of purely electric driving are not enough, but here, within 3 years, a new option will be introduced and replenished. The four-cylinder of the E350e, combined with an electric motor, provides a system output of 279 PS and a system torque of 600 Newton meters.

More engines will follow in the near future. We will be able to give a live preview of this and the many details of the new E-Class from DETROIT!

UPDATE:

“Whether the “new” diesel engine is a new diesel engine? Or just another OM651?

The question came in 5 times via email last night. Hence the short answer: The new diesel is the “OM 654” and a harbinger of the new engine architecture at Daimler. Based on this, there will be 3, 4 and 6 cylinder engines! In other words: a V8 family 😉 (a small), a family of bread and butter engines up to the new top engine for company cars, as a six-in-line and - above everything - a V12. This is what the portfolio of Daimler engines looks like in the near and somewhat distant future.
