Worldwide e-car sales

The first quarter of 2021 will no longer match the record values ​​of the previous year. Nevertheless, the demand remains high.  

Despite a slight dent, the signs for electric cars continue to point to growth worldwide. According to the management consultancy PwC Strategy &, 1,05 million pure e-mobiles and plug-in hybrids were sold in the most important car markets in the first quarter. That is a good 200.000 units less than in the strong previous year's quarter. For the year from April 1, 2020 to March 31.3, 2021 In 170, however, there will be an increase of XNUMX percent.  

Sales increased particularly strongly in China, where the number of e-cars has quintupled after the recovery from the corona pandemic. With 432.000 all-battery cars, the Chinese market is responsible for more than half of global sales. The number of plug-in hybrids also tripled, but with 81.000 vehicles this type of drive only plays a subordinate role in China. 

In Europe, however, the socket hybrids overtook pure e-cars with 213.000 new registrations (plus 160 percent), which were 185.000 units (plus 59 percent). With 143.000 electrified cars and an increase of 172 percent, Germany was the most important growth driver in Europe. In the USA, e-mobility continues to play only a minor role with a total of 106.000 registrations and a market share of 2,7 percent.
