What applies to snow-covered signs?

It's snowing in many places. And some traffic signs are no longer recognizable. And now?

Oops, it's snowing. Many motorists living in the lowlands rub their eyes in amazement this winter at the white splendor that can be seen down to the lower elevations and remains where it is. The snow does not cause unfamiliar driving experiences on the roads for many motorists, it can also cause confusion. Because when there is heavy snowfall, traffic signs are also covered. But what then has to be considered?

Traffic signs must be visible, the ARAG insurance points out. According to a ruling by the Hamm Higher Regional Court (Az .: III-3 RBs 336/09), they must be set up in such a way that they can be easily recognized by road users.

However, that does not mean a license to ignore all snow-covered signs. A driver who is unfamiliar with the location is not required to get out to check a snowy speed limit sign according to his specifications, but drivers who are familiar with the area are expected to stick to the limits. The rule that you must not drive faster than 50 km / h in built-up areas naturally also applies to snow-covered signs. If you are traveling too fast, you risk a fine.

Signs that can be recognized by their characteristic shape must also be observed when they are covered with snow. These signs include, for example, the octagonal “stop” sign or the triangle on the top of the “make sure you have right of way” sign.

When parking, drivers should exercise particular caution and exercise their due diligence. ARAG recommends that motorists look specifically for prohibition signs after parking. If in doubt, it would be better to clear the sign in question of snow to find out which regulation is to be applied. In this way you avoid being fined for wrong parking.

The license plates of the vehicle must always be clearly legible. It is best for drivers to clear them of snow before driving. You are also obliged to ensure that they are always legible when you are out and about. If the weather is right, mud and dirt should be removed from the license plates during a stop.
