Mercedes-Benz E-Class facelift
Mercedes has improved the E-Class in many details. Among other things, a number of new assistance functions should make driving safer. Strange at first glance: This also includes a sleep aid for the driver.
Mercedes is launching its facelifted E-Class in the summer. The optically only slightly changed model of the upper middle class wants to stand out from the current model with new infotainment technology, improved assistance systems as well as more efficient and electrified drives.
The visual innovations go hand in hand with equipment-specific changes. In the future, the entry-level model will be based on the “Avantgarde Line Exterior”, which bears the star in the center of the front, which has also been upgraded with additional chrome. The “Line Avantgarde” and the “Line Exclusive” will also offer more chrome and high-gloss black in the front, while the “AMG Line” and the all-terrain will be more powerful thanks to power domes in the front hood. In addition, full-LED headlights are now part of the standard equipment, while the rear lights, which will be split in two in the future, have been given new illuminated graphics. In addition, the range of exterior colors and rim designs has been renewed.
The assistance systems of the E-Class also received an upgrade. In the future, steering movements will no longer be necessary for the on-board computer to recognize that the driver is gripping the steering wheel. This is intended to increase the ease of use in partially automated driving. In future, a standard collision avoidance will also brake when turning over the opposite lane if the driver overlooks a left turn. The active cruise control can adjust the speed based on navigation information and speed limits. In addition, the pace of traffic jams is automatically reduced with the integration of real-time traffic data. Thanks to the emergency lane function, the lane following assistant can also master lane guidance on the outside. Also new is an exit warning based on the Blind Spot Assist, which is intended to avoid door accidents with cyclists, for example.
In the future, the MBUX infotainment system will also be able to output navigation information in augmented reality. The Linguatronic voice control becomes part of the standard equipment. With Mercedes Me and the corresponding app, the user also has access to some vehicle functions. The Urban Guard is new, it registers whether the vehicle is stolen, towed or jostled and informs its owner. Location is also possible, which can help the police find a stolen vehicle. The plug-in hybrids in particular have a new power nap function that is designed to make it easier to take a nap during a break with the help of lights and sounds.
The performance spectrum of gasoline engines will in future be 115 kW / 156 hp to 270 kW / 367 hp, for diesels 118 kW / 160 hp to 243 kW / 330 hp. Innovations such as a nanoslide cylinder coating should increase their efficiency. The modified nine-speed automatic transmission is also said to offer greater efficiency. A four-cylinder petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid technology is new. The unit, which is called the M 254, has an output of 200 kW / 272 hp, and the starter generator also contributes 15 kW / 20 hp. In addition to Mild, Mercedes will expand the range of plug-in hybrids. In the future, a total of seven part-time streamers will be available.
Mercedes does not yet list prices, but they will rise slightly. The basic version of the E-Class currently costs around 46.000 euros.
