Mini Vision Urbanaut

Cars are primarily being developed as a practical means of transport. At Mini, however, they believe that the range of tasks for future cars could go well beyond that.

The Urbanaut concept car, which was initially presented in a purely virtual manner in November 2020, has now been developed by BMW subsidiary Mini in a version that can be physically experienced. The versatile electric van with a futuristic mobile home character will celebrate its premiere at the DLD (Digital Life Design) conference in Munich at the beginning of July.

Communicative with the outside world

The 4,46 meter long Urbanaut is characterized by a classic van silhouette, which is highlighted with a few striking details. Special features include illuminated wheels or the highly variable front and rear lights, which are only visible when they are active, and which can also represent a mini radiator grille.

The vehicle is basically designed to be in close contact with the outside world - even when it is parked. Then the driver can choose between the usage scenarios Chill and Vibe. Chill turns the Urbanaut into a place of retreat where you can relax or work. Vibe is designed to use the van as a living room together with guests. A special feature is the hinged front window. The resulting “street balcony” creates a generous feeling of space and also enables interaction with the outside world. Basically, the urban car should also react to its immediate surroundings and, for example, adapt the interior ambience to the outside conditions so that both worlds merge with one another.

Driving a car in the sofa

The textile landscape, which dispenses with chrome and leather, creates a living room atmosphere. Instead, sustainable, durable and warm materials were used. The rear seat with its arched back seat covered with knitted textiles can be used as a sofa or lounger. If the dashboard is lowered, a lying area is also created in the front area. There is also a small glass showcase in the C-pillar. There is also a table area with a plant in the middle.

The Urbanaut can also drive. The corresponding usage scenario is called "Wanderlust". Then the driver takes a classic sitting position behind an extendable steering wheel. Alternatively, those who want to forego steering work can activate the autopilot. The Urbanaut is primarily intended for use in urban areas, but the vehicle should also be suitable for long journeys. The drive is purely electric, Mini does not provide any information on the engine, power or range.
