The toad migration starts in spring. This year the animals are particularly early.
Spring-like temperatures let the toads wander. As soon as the night temperatures are above five degrees Celsius, the amphibians have a wedding mood and they go to their spawning grounds, as the nature conservation association NABU announces. Drivers should heed the corresponding signs and slow down on roads near waterways.
The toads prefer to be out and about in light rain between dusk and midnight. Caution is advisable not only in order not to kill the animals carelessly - even the draft of a passing car can mean the end for them - but also in order not to endanger the toad helpers of environmental protection organizations. Last but not least, your own security interests also play a role. Animals run over can form a dangerous lubricating film on which braking becomes a slide.
The automatic toad rescue is not advisable. Most of all, motorists would endanger themselves on country roads. The help should therefore be left to experienced conservationists, who enable the animals to cross the road on known hiking routes
