Detroit 2014 - VW Beetle Dune Concept

Five centimeters higher than the series Beetle, brazen fender flares and a clever ski rack. The VW Beetle Dune does a lot differently than its Beetle brothers, which are already on sale. And yet, if VW has its way - then this Beetle in cross look could soon be on our streets.

Off-roader without all-wheel drive - VW Beetle Dune

Does it make any sense to present an off-roader without all-wheel drive? Hard to say. The urban new car buyer prefers to stand out visually from his fellow human beings because of the off-road capability of his SUV.

I found the concept vehicle less impressive. This is not due to the finish of the model, but rather to the idea behind it. If that was all there was for you in Wolfsburg most important auto show in the United States in the drawer, then they should First sales in the basement stay.

Volkswagen plans to launch new SUV models for all series shortly. If the Dune is the SUV version of the Beetle, then you jump too short. There are no martial louvres in the hood, chrome-plated running boards and pleasant daytime running lights.

As is often the case with hand-made concept vehicles, the real “tricks” are often hidden from the many eyes of trade fair visitors. However, I had the opportunity to be shown a hidden idea of DUNE.

The trick with the spoiler

A small team often only has a few weeks to go from the release of a concept model to its implementation and the finished exhibit at the trade fair. But sometimes the prototype experts still have a little time to implement their own ideas on the model. And then you really find yourself in the area of “real craftsmanship”.

To symbolize the leisure character of the VW Beetle Dune, he got skis strapped to his back. But how do you mount them there? The technicians of prototype construction in Wolfsburg came up with a clever and very special variant for technology freaks. The split rear spoiler, including a folding mechanism that is finely milled from aluminum. Brilliant.

Even if the rest of the Beetle Dune is more of a normal trade fair program, the trick with the spoiler is “cool”!
