In Germany, the Ford Mondeo only at the beginning of 2015 came on the market, but in the US, the middle-grader rolls already longer under the name Fusion on the streets. So long that the facelift version was presented at the auto show in Detroit.
Already since 2012 the Fusion, which came on the market with us beginning 2015 as new Ford Mondeo, is traveling in the USA. At the Detroit Auto Show, Ford has now introduced the revised model of the available exclusively as a sedan mid-size model. That the European variant - including the station wagon - will benefit from the improvements, is likely. When the facelift comes to us on the market, however, is still in the stars. The production of the twins runs separately; while the merger will in future only be made in Mexico, the Mondeo rolls off the production line in Spain.
Visually, the latest edition of the Fusion can be seen on a more pronounced grille and new air intakes in the front apron, also work the redesigned headlights now with LED technology, which already has the European model in the Vignale equipment. The designers have also put their hands on the rear lights. Overall, the modifications are indeed decent, but the sedan looks more confident and sporty compared to the current model.
This claim is underlined by the new top model, the Fusion V6 Sport, which boasts larger breathing openings, high-gloss black trim parts, rear spoilers and twin exhaust pipes. Its 2,7-liter turbo V6 provides 243 kW / 330 horsepower and develops 474 Newtonmeter torque. On the road, the force gets over all four wheels, which are frosted with 19-inch rubbers. As a special extra, the V6 Sport offers "intelligent pothole detection" dampers, but that only means that the technology adapts the dampers to the road conditions in fractions of a second. Whether it creates the sports version across the pond, is questionable. It is intended primarily as a response to the extremely low fuel prices in the US, which are currently hampering the sales of the hybrid model. In turn, Ford has made improvements to the software.
In any case, the Mondeo will benefit from the upgrades in the interior. In the future, the automatic transmission will no longer be operated via a selector lever, but via a rotary switch on the center tunnel, which will make it tidier and offer more space for cupholders; Jaguar also uses a comparable system. The comfort features are complemented by the significantly improved Sync3 infotainment system, an automatic parking assistant and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go assistant, which slows down and restarts the merger in a traffic jam to a standstill. This technique is not new, but it was not available at Ford so far. The safety precautions are extended by a collision warning system that recognizes pedestrians and, if necessary, stops the vehicle automatically.
