While new drivers usually had to buy and finance their first car themselves in the past, the proportion of those who were given their first car as a gift has been growing for decades, as a survey by the online car exchange Mobile.de shows about their first car. Accordingly, 38,4 percent of the age group between 18 and 24 years of age received their first car as a gift. In the over 55 age cohort, only 16,5 percent benefited from generous relatives. In addition, 51,8 percent of those questioned over 55 years of age said they had financed their first car themselves, while this was the case for only 9,0 percent in the youngest group. Among the 45 to 54 year olds, the proportion of self-buyers was 44 percent, among the 35 to 44 year olds 38,1 percent and among the 25 to 34 year olds 22,4 percent.
