Before closing, there is research - car insurance change

It's that time again: the insurance companies draw the attention of drivers willing to switch to their offers in an effective way. But there is still a little comparative work to be done before changing insurance.

Since most motor vehicle insurance premiums can be canceled at the end of the year, the insurance companies are currently vigorously soliciting customers.

Especially prime time

There is already movement in the range of tariffs. The price comparison portals Verivox and Check24 have determined, for example, that the tariffs for new contracts have already become cheaper compared to last year. The trend should continue in the coming weeks. The reason is a lower number of claims during the Corona lockdowns. If you switch to another provider, you can save a lot of money. However, one should not blindly change insurance companies. There are a few things to consider before switching.

You should make sure in advance that your own vehicle can find a new insurer without any problems. If you drive an unusual car or a type of vehicle that is likely to be stolen, it can sometimes be difficult to find an insurance company for fully or partially comprehensive insurance. Or it might even be more expensive than before.

More helps more when changing insurance

The first reference point for research can be the free online comparison portals. They offer a quick overview. It is best to use several portals at the same time. You have to keep in mind, however, that these do not always list all insurance companies. Contact points are also the websites of the direct insurance companies. A price comparison can also be made here quickly. A call to your own insurer or - if available - to the insurance agent also enables price inquiries and perhaps also interesting offers.

The question remains: what does the desired insurance cover look like? Do you need all-round protection with fully comprehensive insurance, the legally required motor vehicle liability insurance or the middle ground with partial comprehensive insurance? The answer to this question can only be given individually.

What to look for

Motor vehicle liability insurance is required by law in Germany. It covers the repair costs of a third-party vehicle, for example. Here you should pay attention to the highest possible coverage. The fully comprehensive insurance also protects against vandalism, such as intentionally caused scratches on the paintwork. This additional protection against a total write-off is particularly recommended for newer vehicles. If the vehicle is three years or older, it may be worthwhile to switch to partially comprehensive insurance. This also covers repair costs in the event of glass breakage and elementary damage such as storms, hail or a lightning strike. Damage to cables or hoses caused by marten bites is also covered by the partial insurance. This insurance is usually taken out with a deductible of 150 euros per claim.

If you have finally received a cheap offer, the old contract must be terminated. Since most motor vehicle insurance contracts are concluded for a calendar year, you can cancel them up to November 30th without any special reason. Notice of termination must be made in writing in any case. An informal cover letter is sufficient. It should contain the contract number, registration number of the vehicle and the end of the contract (31.12.). In addition, the signature and the date must not be missing in the cover letter. If you want to be on the safe side, send them by registered mail against acknowledgment of receipt. If the notice of termination has been submitted, the insurance cover remains in effect until December 31.12st.
