BMW X3 / X4 facelift

In keeping with current BMW fashion, the X3 and X4 will have a larger radiator grille for the 2022 model year. But a lot has happened behind that too.

BMW is significantly upgrading the SUV brothers X3 and X4 visually and technically for the 2022 model year. The all-wheel drive, which will be available in late summer, will first celebrate their European premiere at the Chengdu Motor Show World and at the IAA in Munich (September 7th to 12th) at the end of August. At the same time, the high-performance M Competition variants will also be launched.

Both configurable very similarly

The visual innovations include a newly styled and grown radiator grille as well as vertical air inlets in the visually heavily redesigned front apron, which now also integrates an underrun protection. In both cases, there are full-LED headlights as standard, which are slightly flatter. While matrix lights can be ordered as an option for the X3, they are standard equipment for the X4. Laser light is also optionally available for both model series. At the rear, a new graphic of the full LED taillights, a newly designed underride guard and larger tailpipe exhaust trims catch the eye.

In the interior, the X3 and X4 offer a 10,25-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard, which can optionally be expanded to 12,3 inches. There is a digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, also with a 12,3-inch screen diagonal. In addition, both SUVs offer a new center console with the control island newly introduced in the new 4 Series, which bundles among other things the controller, gear selector lever and engine start button. Standard equipment includes three-zone automatic air conditioning and sports seats with a new generation of seat covers.

Less consumption through electricity

As before, there are three diesel engines xDrive20d (140 kW / 190 PS), xDrive30d (210 kW / 286 PS) and M40d (250 kW / 340 PS) with mild hybrid technology. In future, the three petrol engines xDrive20i (135 kW / 184 PS), xDrive30i (180 kW / 245 PS) and M40i (265 kW / 360 PS) will also receive support from the 48-volt starter generator. In addition to better driving performance, electrification also means slightly lower consumption. In addition, customers can still order the xDrive2020e plug-in hybrid launched in 30 with a system output of 215 kW / 292 PS and an electric range of 50 kilometers. All drives are combined with all-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic. The optionally available sports transmission is part of the standard equipment on all X4 and X3 variants M40i and M40d.

The high-performance M Competition variants, which will also start in the summer, will continue to be powered by an in-line six-cylinder with 375 kW / 510 hp with a torque increased from 600 to 650 Newton meters. In the course of the facelift, the sprint time for the M-Boliden from standstill to 100 km / h has been reduced from 4,1 to 3,8 seconds. While the standard X3 and X4 M Competition reach a maximum of 250 km / h, when ordering the M Driver's Package, 285 km / h are practically possible.

Easier updates

BMW has also expanded the range of assistance systems for both SUV series. The Hochbeiner, which is always connected to the Internet, offers cloud-based navigation, a remote access app, smartphone connection and deep integration of Amazon Alexa. In addition, software updates and new functions can be downloaded over-the-air in the future.

BMW has not yet announced prices; the X3 currently starts at around 48.000 euros and the X4 at around 52.000 euros.
