Brand preview: Skoda

Skoda relies fully on that for models with electric drive SUV-Concept. A counterpart to the VW ID.3 or Cupra Born, the customer shouldn't wait.

Skoda's first electric car, the Enyaq, is also an SUV

It seems that the strategists have done everything right in the past few years. Above all, this includes the consistent alignment of the European model portfolio to SUVs. Where there was once only one Yeti, names like Kodiaq, Karoq and Kamiq are now on the tailgate. The vehicle category now makes up 40 percent at Skoda. India recently got its own SUV with the Kushaq. And with the Enyaq, even an SUV ushers in the electric age.

Germany likes Skoda

The sales figures for the Czech brand are also correct. Even in the pandemic and lockdown year 2020, Skoda still delivered over a million vehicles. 181.000 of them in Germany. You get a market share of 6,2 percent and you can pat yourself on the back of being the number one import brand for the twelfth year in a row. So it is not surprising that seven Skoda models were each voted “Company Car of the Year” in the fleet business.

There are ambitious plans for the future. "We want to be one of the five best-selling brands in Europe by 2030 and become the leading European brand in India, Russia and North Africa," says Skoda boss Thomas Schäfer. The proportion of electric vehicles in Europe is expected to grow to 50 to 70 percent by the end of the decade, and the Czech Republic will even develop into an e-mobility hub.

Even more electric SUVs

In autumn, Skoda will be presenting the hatchback version of the Enyaq, which is based on the VW group platform MEB as is the hatchback Enyaq and is likely to be one of the most beautiful SUV coupés in the segment. For sporty and ambitious customers there will be an RS version next year, whose debut is expected at the Geneva Motor Show, according to industry experts. However, it will not stop with two electric SUVs. Presumably in 2024 Skoda should position another Stromer one segment lower, quasi the counterpart to the VW ID.3 and Cupra Born, only the Czechs are again relying on the SUV format.

Still camouflaged: the new Enyaq Coupé

The mother in Wolfsburg had already announced that she was working on an MEB entry in order to be able to offer an entry-level electric model in the 4,20-meter class at reasonable prices. Market start: probably 2025. Skoda is likely to derive a derivative from this at the same time. It is currently being discussed how much SUV or crossover concept there is in the Stromer and whether this model should become the successor to the Kamiq.

New platform for the Fabia

Conventionally, it continues this summer with the Fabia, the second most successful model of the brand after the Octavia. Over 4,5 million Fabia have been produced since generation one in 1999. The fourth generation is now based on the MQB platform for the first time, with all its advantages in terms of efficient drives, connectivity and assistance systems. The Fabia will start at 13.990 euros. The Fabia Combi falls victim to the model structuring. At first it was planned, but rumors are growing that Skoda no longer considers a station wagon in the A0 segment to be up-to-date. The Scala will not have a successor either.

New light for the Kodiaq

But the Kodiaq, the world's most successful SUV from Skoda. Skoda started its SUV strategy with him and sold more than 600.000 units in 60 countries within four years. Now there is an update that includes LED matrix light, among other things. The next generation is on the agenda for 2024. The Kodiaq could be the last model in Skoda's portfolio that still rolls off the production line with an internal combustion engine.

A little earlier, around the end of 2023, the Czech carmakers should hit the ground running with the next Superb. However, the flagship is not expected to go on the market until the beginning of 2024. Skoda will no longer build the new Superb in the Kvasiny plant, but in Bratislava / Slovenia, together with the next, technically identical VW Passat (the same wheelbase for the first time). But while the Passat then only leaves the factory as a Variant, Skoda continues to drive on two tracks. The sedan is to follow the Superb Combi almost six months later.
