Attacks vehicles such as cars and trucks are mostly associated with Islamists. However, the statistics show a different picture - albeit not a particularly clear one.
Politically motivated attacks with vehicles usually have no religious background. That Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) has registered 2019 crimes across Germany since 301, in which a vehicle was used as an "understatement", as the federal government announced in response to a request from parliament.
Who are the perpetrators of the crime?
80 of the perpetrators came from the left spectrum, 79 from the right. For 36 acts, “foreign ideologies” were the background. Three were religiously motivated, in 103 cases the authorities were unable to pinpoint the political motivation. According to the BKA, an exact breakdown of the criminal offenses is not possible, since attacks with cars or other vehicles are not separately recorded statistically; therefore not all of the cases registered here involved attacks on life and health. However, a total of 38 people were slightly injured and three seriously injured. No deaths were registered.
