The Porsche electric Macan will be available at the end of 2019

Sports car manufacturer Porsche has decided to produce the next generation of the Porsche Macan as a fully electric series. At the beginning of the next decade, the compact SUV from Porsche with a purely electric drive should roll off the production line.

At the end of 2019, the Taycan, Porsche’s first all-electric sports car, will be launched – and its derivative, the Taycan Cross Turismo, a little later.

The next generation of the Porsche Macan will be electric

“Electromobility and Porsche fit together perfectly. Not just because of the efficiency, but above all because of the sporty properties,” says Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG. “By 2022, we will be investing more than six billion euros in electromobility and by 2025, every second new Porsche vehicle could have an electric drive,” continued Blume.

"Nevertheless, over the next ten years we will be focusing on a drive mix of further optimized petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models and purely electrically powered sports cars. Our goal is a technological pioneering role, which is why we are consistently gearing the company towards the mobility of the future," said Oliver Blume.

Elektro-Macan comes from Lepizig again

The company had already decided at the beginning of July last year to launch the next generation of the Porsche Macan at the Leipzig location to manufacture. The investments in electromobility at the Leipzig site create the possibility of producing fully electric vehicles on the existing production line in the future.

The next generation of the Porsche Macan is the starting signal for the electrification of a compact SUV. Like the 600-hp Porsche Taycan, the SUV features 800-volt technology. It is based on the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) architecture developed in cooperation with Audi AG.

Porsche Leipzig GmbH started series production of the SUV Cayenne in 2002 with 259 employees. The Macan model was the inspiration for a change back in 2011 and is a real success story: At that time, the Leipzig plant was expanded into a so-called full plant with its own body shop and paint shop.

When the factory started operations in February 2014, 40.000 units of the compact SUV were planned annually. Today, more than 90.000 pieces are produced annually for the global markets. Two years ago, the last stage of expansion was put into operation, which means that the Panamera series is now also being manufactured entirely in Leipzig. There are currently 4000 employees in Leipzig.
