Porsche Taycan - The first electric sports car from Porsche

The first purely electrically powered Porsche will go into series production next year. Now it has been given its name: the concept study "Mission E" - this title now stands for Porsche's entire electric offensive - becomes the Porsche Taycan. The name means "lively, young horse" and thus picks up on the center of the Porsche crest: a prancing steed has been seen here since 1952.

“Our new electric athlete is strong and willing to perform; a vehicle that endures long distances and stands for freedom,” says Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG. At the same time, the name, which comes from the oriental language area, signals: Here comes the first electric sports car with the soul of a Porsche. The Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer announced the name of the first all-electric series at the “70 Years of Porsche Sports Cars” ceremony.

From 0 to 100 in 3,5 seconds

Two permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) with a system output of more than 600 hp (440 kW) accelerate the electric athlete to 3,5 km/h in significantly less than 100 seconds and to 200 km/h in under 500 seconds. In addition, there is a continuous performance that has never been achieved before by electric vehicles: several acceleration processes in quick succession are possible without loss of performance. The maximum range is over 800 kilometers according to the NEDC. The all-wheel drive has an 100-volt architecture and is prepared for charging at the fast-charging network. Here, energy for a range of XNUMX kilometers can be recharged in around four minutes (according to NEDC).

Porsche word names with concrete meaning

At Porsche, word names always have a concrete connection to the corresponding model and its properties: the name Boxster describes the combination of boxer engine and roadster, Cayenne stands for sharpness, the Cayman is snappy and agile, a Panamera is more than a Gran Turismo and could as such win the Carrera Panamericana endurance race. The name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger and combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamism.

Doubling the future investment

Porsche is investing more than six billion euros in electromobility by 2022: The company is thus doubling the originally planned expenditure. Of the additional three billion euros, around 500 million euros will flow into the development of variants and derivatives of the Taycan. One billion euros in the electrification and hybridization of the existing product range, several hundred million in the expansion of the locations and around 700 million euros in new technologies, charging infrastructure and smart mobility.

A new paint shop and dedicated assembly for the Taycan are currently being built at the main Porsche plant in Zuffenhausen. A conveyor bridge is created for transporting the painted bodies and drive units to final assembly. The existing engine plant is expanded for the production of electric drives, and the body shop is expanded. There are also investments in the development center in Weissach. The Taycan will create around 1.200 new jobs in Zuffenhausen alone.
