Significant plus in June

The number of new cars in June increased compared to the same month last year. The overall balance for the current year is also positive.

The German new car market is only slowly recovering from Corona. In June the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) registered 274.152 newly registered cars, 25 percent more than in the same month of the previous year, which was marked by the lockdown. In the private market, growth of 26 percent was somewhat stronger than in the market as a whole. At the end of the first half of the year, a total of 1.390.889 new vehicles were registered, almost 15 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. Nevertheless, the number is still around 500.000 units below the pre-Corona level.

In June, cars with alternative drives were again in particularly high demand. 33.420 newly registered electric cars (BEV) correspond to a quadrupling (plus 312 percent) and a share of 12,2 percent. The number of new plug-in hybrids (PHEV) was 31.314, which corresponds to a growth of 191 percent. There were also 76.563 hybrid cars (plus 153 percent). The number of new passenger cars with fossil fuels, however, continued to decline compared to the same month last year: the gasoline-powered cars lost 4,6 percent and had a market share of 39,5 percent, while the share of diesel cars was after a decline of 18,8 percent at 19,9 percent. The average CO2 emissions of newly registered cars fell by 19 percent to 121,7 grams per kilometer.
