Diesel in the emission test - no problems after the limit value judgment

The EU court had tipped the emission tolerances for diesel cars at the end of 2018. An ADAC test shows that this should not cause any problems for modern engines.

SP-X / Munich. New diesel cars emit significantly less nitrogen oxide than allowed. In the ADAC's ongoing eco-tests, most current Euro 6c / d vehicles on the road not only undercut the limit for real traffic, but also the stricter laboratory limit.

That could turn out to be important, as the Court of Justice of the European Union (CFI) recently declared the significantly higher limit values for road traffic to be inadmissible. These are currently 2,1 so-called "conformity factor" higher than permitted in the laboratory, so diesel cars are allowed to emit 168 milligrams of NOx per kilometer in normal operation, while the Euro 6 standard actually only allows 80 milligrams. But the regulation is only valid for one year; then the EU Commission must have found new limits for real NOx emissions.

Even if, in the strictest conceivable case, the laboratory value of 2020 milligrams should also apply on the road from 80, according to the measurements of the ADAC, numerous diesels should not have any problems with type approval. Many models even stayed below the 50 milligram limit in the automobile club's tests. The same applies to petrol engines, which, however, have not previously been suspected of having problems with reaching nitrogen oxide limit values.

The ADAC continuously tests current car models with its own consumption and exhaust gas tests and publishes the results on its website under the heading "Ecotest". All cars are tested on the test bench, many additionally in real road traffic. It had already become apparent in the past few months that the majority of diesel models would remain in the double-digit milligram range in terms of NOx emissions.
