Digital guardian angel

Not only cars should be networked with each other. The smart technology also offers safety advantages for cyclists.

The networking of cyclists and cars is intended to increase road safety in the future. Deutsche Telekom and the automotive supplier Continental are working on a system that warns road users of impending collisions with one another using their mobile phones. The cloud-based technology uses GPS, cellular communications and acceleration sensors from smartphones and vehicles.

The system calculates the probable positions for every user participating in the traffic in the next five seconds. If the comparison with others reveals a risk of accident, a warning is sent to the respective smartphones or on-board computers. In order to ensure the fastest possible communication, the information is always evaluated by the local cloud computer ("Multi-Access Edge Computing").

The developers want to present the digital guardian angel for cyclists and e-scooter drivers in autumn as part of the IST World Congress. It is then to be further developed towards series production.
