Driving Report: Mitsubishi ASX 4 × 4 automatic

Since 2010 there is the successful Mitsubishi ASX in Europe. With the two sister models Citroën C4 Aircross and Peugeot 4008 the compact SUV is one of the best-selling models in its class in Germany. Since June 2013 Mitsubishi Motors has also been offering the ASX in a variant with an automatic transmission.

So far, there has not been much to criticize ASX with 150 PS diesel engine and four-wheel drive. The manual six-speed gearbox is well-graded, the gearshift is perfectly at hand and the gearshifts are not too long. And that the ASX in itself belongs to the model pupils of the class of compact SUV, one could in my driving reports read out, but also at Colleagues who drove the ASX.

So what was there to improve?

Little things that were taken over with the facelift for 2013? The revised design looks fresh and sporty, but doesn't make the two model years before it look old either. Gut gemacht. Instead of the 4WD rotary switch pulled a button in the center console. Less important.  The multi-link rear suspension has been redesigned to provide more agility and ride comfort. A fine thing. You finally get an automatic transmission for the ASX. PERFECT!

Six courses and a sip of more displacement

Active drivers have no problem with a manual transmission, but the SUV class is ideally suited to make friends with the advantages of an automatic transmission. And so it was years of renunciation that are now over. With the six-speed automatic from the bigger brother Outlander, you can now delegate changing gears to the machine. In order to make the drive comfort supreme and because an automatic always eats up a little power, Mitsubishi added 400 cc more displacement on top. If you choose the ASX with six-speed automatic, you get the still 150 hp four-cylinder turbo diesel with 2.2 liters, instead of the familiar 1.8 DI-D.

While the performance remains the same, the 2.2 DI-D presses a proud 360 Nm on the crankshaft and that even earlier and in a wider speed range (from 1.500 to 2.750 Nm). With so much strength you can easily surf through the asphalt jungle and if you can rest your left leg, you will feel how much more sovereignty you gain in everyday life.

Circuit under control

The Mitsubishi ASX with automatic transmission has shift paddles on the steering wheel. So anyone who thinks he should mess up the transmission in his work, who can do this at any time. A test drive which led not only over hill and dale, but also over several hundred kilometers of country road showed however: The transmission knows exactly what it does.

The style under control

As with the other models, so Mitsubishi also offers the automatic version in three trim levels. Invite is the base, Intense the middle and Instyle the top variant.

Seven airbags, ABS and ESP are always on board. The equipment variants differ more in questions of comfort. So the upscale instyle version not only carries a practical roof rack in series, but also a large panoramic glass roof with LED ambient lighting. In addition, the rear windows were darkened, privacy glasses call the guys from Mitsubishi this kind of sun and privacy.

And you also have to do without xenon light in the basic equipment. From the Intense version, the exterior mirrors can be adjusted electrically and folded. An advantage that should not be underestimated, because even if the ASX belongs to the class of compact SUVs - with a width of just under 1.80 m, it can be an advantage if you can quickly fold up the mirrors.

And finally ...

For me the ASX automatic is the perfect ASX. I was already a fan of the 1.8 DI-D 4WD ASX, but I missed an automatic version, especially when driving around town and in stop - & - go traffic. With the increase in displacement and torque, Mitsubishi has not simply converted from “shift it by yourself” to “let it shift”, but has also ensured that the automatic ASX is not burdened with the phlegm of an old man's SUV in everyday life. Both thumps up!
