Hundreds of thousands of columns are still missing

The need for charging options for e-cars is growing rapidly. Hundreds of thousands will have to be built in Germany alone over the next ten years.

In Germany, over 2030 additional public charging points will be required for electric cars by 400.000. In extreme cases, the number would have to rise from the current 33.000 to 843.000, as the National Charging Infrastructure Control Center has calculated on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport. The exact amount depends, among other things, on the expansion of the private charging network and the future number of fast charging stations.

According to the experts' calculations, the number of e- and hybrid cars in Germany is likely to rise to up to 14,8 million in the next ten years. According to the forecast, around 41 percent of the power required will be refueled at the approximately 7 million private wall boxes. Another 27 percent in company parking lots. The remaining 27 percent would have to be covered by public pillars. In cities, a public charging point for 14 vehicles is necessary, in rural areas one is enough for 23 vehicles.

It remains to be seen how the charging infrastructure can be operated economically. The Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW) recently stated that with the current quota of 13 e-cars and plug-in hybrids per charging point, the sale of traction current is not worthwhile. The association expects that the currently around 33.000 charging points will only pay off with 550.000 pure e-mobiles. There are currently around 240.000 such vehicles. There are also 200.000 plug-in hybrids, although their power requirements are significantly lower.
